I bought this book when I had no experience in decorating and it has guided me through the simplest and very complicated cakes and skills. It has inspired me to be brave and I am filled with wonder at what I have achieved.
It was the first of many many purchases but I have to say it is the one I go back to and whatever it says it always works whether it is a skill or a recipe. It contains absolutely everything from baking the cake to the flowers, models icing, chocolate etc. It leads you through each stage with step bystep understandable instructions and illustrations.
My family and friends now think I am almost profesional but I have to say its not the same story with other books. If you only buy one book it has to be this one.

As a total novice I was advised to buy this book. It is well set out in a very logical sequence that has proved to be wonderful for me (a total beginner). All the pictures are in colour & all the decorated cakes are beautifully illustrated. It is easy to read & understand and begins at the beginning - how to bake a cake - even that I needed! It inspires one to have a go at modeling, sugar flowers and painting to name but a few techniques, as well as inspiring one to design one's own cakes with the newly acquired skills. There are useful sections such as a 'Glossary of Terms' & another on 'Equipment' - all unknown to me prior to having the book and essential for the beginner. Hope this helps you.

This is a very good book for beginners and also has some very useful tips for more advanced cake decorators. The best part of this book is the very detailed and step-by-step way in which flower-making in sugarcraft is explained with photos for every stage for flowers - for example, a rose is explained in 6 stages. However there are only very few flowers - the best ones are the rose, sweet pea and poppy.

Also there is an overview of all the techniques you will ever need in decorating a cake - piping, lace making, smocking, figure-modelling, runouts, etc. The only section I found a bit disappointing was the children's cakes section, which I felt did not have any new or interesting ideas. But, overall - an excellent buy.

WOW!! THIS IS THE BOOK, THIS IS THE BOOK I TELL YOU!!!! This book is fantastic, as a novice to cake decorating, this book answers, most of my questions and guides you through stage by stage, I highly recommend this book. I initially bought The international school of sugarcraft books 1 and 2 as recommended and they are both very helpful and Im not taking anything away from them as they are great books but this book tops them both. This is the book that should be bought first in my opinion, if you cannot afford to buy all three, as it takes you through many processes in detail.

It has a good few cakes and gives you the ingredients need for various cake tins, from a 5 inch right through to a 12 inch tin, which is a very useful guide!

It shows you the proper way to line tins, cover cakes with marzipan, sugarpaste and royal icing. Cover cake boards. Basic piper, pressure piping, embroidery oh gosh the list goes on and on and on.....

It gives you recipes for making your own marzipan, royal icing, sugarpaste, chocolate sugarpaste, model paste, flower paste, pastillage, glace icing and chocolate ganache.

Takes you through how to make many adult cakes like gateau's and many childrens cakes.

This is a very good book for the novice and also the advanced.

Excellent book & value for money, but I made the mistake of buying two different (or what I thought to be different) books at the beginning of a sugarcraft course. This book is identical to 'The Home Guide to Cake Decorating (Paperback)' The Home Guide to Cake Decorating

Only the authors & book covers are different!

I have completed most of the cakes in this book and it is really simple to follow. I would definitely recommend it for a beginner or just for inspiration! :o)

Borrowed this book from my local library and did not want to take it back so searched Amazon for a copy. This is a brilliant resource book, packed with ideas and information in an easy to read style. A book not to be read cover to cover, although you could. A book to be dipped into. To have on your bookshelf as a resouce. It wont be left on the shlf if you are interested in decorating cakes. I would say that if you are new to cake decorating and are only purchasing one book, this should be it.

I would just like to say before giving my reasons to my 3 stars that I really like this book, but I gave it 3 stars - not because there is a problem, but it is the SAME BOOK as THE HOME GUIDE TO CAKE DECORATING. It is published by the same company, but this book has larger pages and a different front cover. Either book (which ever front cover you prefer) is excellent though so deffinately get one of them!

Anyone who is interested in sugarcraft I suggest you buy this book. It leads you through all stages in cake decoration. For beginners it will come in very useful.

This book also covers the basics of cake making and decorating. It includes recipes for different types of sponge cakes and how much you will need for different size tins. Also there is quantities and tips for applying fondant, Buttercream and royal icing.

It leads through steps to making fondant flowers, people and other things. It is full of pictures to guide you and breaks it down into easy manageable steps.
There are also steps to decorating many different types of cakes - at the back are ideas for wedding, children cakes and more. Some are really stunning and the cakes vary in difficulty but you will probably want to attempt most of them.
Look out for the Teddy Bear's Tea Party cake - it is very detailed and quite gorgeous. Just don't attempt it right away!

This is a great book. If you are interested in learning cake decorating then definitely try this book. It easy enough to follow but doesn't patronise you either. It has enough ideas and techniques to keep you occupied a long time.
