Product Description

This 4-disc set spans the breadth of Rohmer s remarkable filmmaking career, which remained fresh, vital and inventive until the very end. All the films included display Rohmer s trademark intelligence and wit, and maintain a remarkably consistent quality, from his debut feature The Sign of Leo (one of the first films of the French New Wave), to romantic comedy Rendez-vous in Paris , espionage thriller Triple Agent , and his final, extraordinary film The Romance of Astrea and Celadon .

First, let me say that I cannot possibly recommend the films of Eric Rohmer enough, and despite the fact that this is clearly a quickly-cobbled-together cash-in package that Artificial Eye is putting out in order to capitalise on Rohmer's recent death, any package that makes his films available to a wider audience I cannot help but commend. The four films contained herein (or, rather, supposedly contained herein; see below) are certainly not Rohmer's best, but for anyone already under his inimitable spell, the fact that it contains both his first and final features is alone surely worth the price of admission.

However, to anyone who buys (or, especially, has bought already) a copy of this set, a word of caution to check immediately the first of its four discs. On receipt, I found that the film and DVD purporting to be The Sign Of Leo was instead a copy of the Artificial Eye release of Rohmer's two short films The Bakery Girl Of Monceau and Suzanne's Career! Seeing as how their old The Eric Rohmer Collection (Le Signe du Lion, Le Baoulangere de Monceau, La Carriere de Suzanne) [DVD] [1966] set contained one disc with these shorts, with its other disc containing The Sign Of Leo, it seems obvious that the masters got switched around somewhere, and that the quality control fellow must have been asleep at the wheel. (Did I mention that this set seemed like a bit of a rush job? Seems I might have been on to something....)

So: I cannot caution any potential buyers of this set enough to either wait for a recall and switcheroo on these discs, or to, at the very least, pop that particular disc in their player immediately on receipt.
