Format:Audio CD
This is 60 tracks of Ella, mostly from her years on Decca in the 40's and early 50's, before Norman Grantz picked her up for his Verve label. The Decca recordings are of a high quality for their age. Bing Crosby ensured that the label he was also signed to, used the best most up to date equipment.
A few tracks dip back to her earlier work with Chick Webb's band, including their monster hit from 1938 'A Tisket A Tasket'
I don't have the energy or time to list all the tracks. Most are fairly pop slanted. There are few real jazz nuggets, and duets with Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan and The Ink Spots etc. Then there is the Be-bop magic of 'How High The Moon'. Ella's musicality, her tonal purity and mirth, infuse the whole affair. She could scat like no-one else too.
My favorite track on here is 'My Happiness' from 1948. On the slushy side, but worth the meagre price of the set by itsself.
You already know instinctively if this could be your thing. If it is, order it now.
