Book Description

28 Jan 2010
Since being diagnosed with the pre-diabetic condition Syndrome X, Antony Worrall Thompson has done more than any other chef to reinvent the way we eat while managing glucose levels and maintaining a healthy weight. From Sweet and Sour Prawns to Spicy Lamb Tagine, the 200 recipes here demonstrate just how much world cuisines have to offer the diabetic. And although Western eating habits aren't always easy to adapt to diabetic requirements, he shows it is still possible to enjoy a traditional Sunday roast or an indulgent dessert. Each recipe has been analysed by a dietician and is accompanied by at-a-glance nutritional information, making it easier to manage your condition and at the same time expand your culinary horizons. So whether you have diabetes, or live with someone who does, this is the book for food lovers who know that healthy food should also mean delicious food.

Review

'The Essential Diabetes Cookbook is good for people affected by diabetes, especially if newly diagnosed and drowning in a sea of information. It certainly changes the image of 'diabetic food' and shows that if you have diabetes, your food life is definitely not over.' --Delicious Magazine

When the book starts by suggesting that diabetic meals should contain 40% of carbohydrate you know that this is based on outdated information. For type 2 diabetics reducing carbohydrate intake is the best thing they can do to control blood sugar and many of the meals in this book will cause sharp spikes in blood sugar within an hour or two of being eaten. That said there are some nice recipes here but most of them should not be targeted at diabetics.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Essential Diabetes Cookbook 28 Feb 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is a very good recipe book. It is very comprehensive and caters for all food types - meat;fish and vegetarian eaters. It is a good size - you can prop it up against a wall and read as you cook. It is attractively photographed.

The range of recipes from across the world made me restock my spices and also buy a new wok. I have to say that I had no time for A. Worrall Thompson before I read an article about the book. He just struck me as yet another celebrity chef amongst the many. However, he has created a very good book for diabetics.

The only problem is that there is no indication of GI factor in any of the recipes unlike my other cookbook "Quick Recipes for Diabetes" by Louise Blair and Norma McGough. However, Louise Blair co-authors "The Essential Diabetes Cookbook" and Diabetes UK are also involved.

To conclude I would recommend this book for anyone who lives with a diabetic in an effort to make fun wholesome food.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy your food 25 April 2010
Format:Hardcover
A cookery book for anyone and you do not have to be a diabetic. Easy to follow, and having now tried some of the dishes each one has been great.
AWT has produced a cookery book that needs to be in every kitchen for meals with something for everyone. Even the pictures are a feast.

5.0 out of 5 stars delicious 18 July 2010
Format:Hardcover
I bought this in hope of finding inspiration and wasn't disappointed. The recipes use readily available ingredients, fresh, tinned and frozen as well as an assortment of herbs and spices to add interest. The diabetic in my family has been delighted with the delicious results, so different from previous, dull-but-worthy, efforts. I recommend this to anyone coping with the dietary needs of a newly diagnosed relative and also to anyone seeking to avoid cooking two different meals!

3.0 out of 5 stars Delicious but not really Diabetic recipes 15 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
Delicious recipes for those with poor Glucose tolerance, like AWT himself. As the earlier reviewer pointed out many of these recipes are unsuitable for diabetics controlling their condition through diet. We cant do carbohydrate. Thats it. No more than 15/20 grams per meal. Even low GI carbs are still carbs.

5.0 out of 5 stars easy exciting and healthy 26 Mar 2012
Format:Hardcover
diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and on insulin etc, i was a bit overwhelmed, but i got this book and my husband made me the involtini recipe, and it was fabulous. the recipes are suitable for diabetics, and are spicy and exciting. they are not that expensive to make either. they really suited me as you are much more limited with blood glucose levels when you are pregnant, and once we started using this book, i started to get to a good level. now I have a lovely 4 month old girl-Síomha, and we are still using this book. thanks A.W.

3.0 out of 5 stars Happy but to much fish
Good book but as I don't eat fish it narrowed down the choice of recipe's considerably, I was hoping for more meat or veggie recipe's.

Disappointed with this book - just another sensible eating cook book with nothing in it to excite or educate a person newly diagosed

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Well written and well presented. Not used it in action in the kitchen yet, so I can't say if the pages wipe clean if a bit of tomato juice makes break for freedom.
