This particular compilation has all the essential hits, these being It's my party, Judy's turn to cry, She's a fool, Maybe I know, You don't own me, Sunshine lollipops and rainbows, Look of love and my personal favorite, California nights. Most of the other songs here were minor American hits -minor in terms of chart placement but major in quality. You know the way pop music goes - once singers are deemed unfashionable, radio schedulers ignore their music.
With 18 tracks, this compilation is probably just right for most people seeking Lesley's hits of the sixties.
Lesley Gore sold absolutely charabanc loads of records in the US in the 1960s but was a more limited success in the UK. Like so many of the early 60s singers there are plenty of very serious web sites devoted to the lady with the concrete hair but this somehow misses the point.
I bought this collection with the expectation of listening to it just once but I must admit that it now gets played pretty regularly. I think many of the toons still sound fresh in part because they haven't had years of radio play in the UK. Make no mistake these are all fairly short & simple tracks telling of love & rejection but are very easy to listen to & often have some insidious hooks in the chorus that burp out of your own mouth just when you least expect them to.
If you have heard & like the original Its My Party (that is loads better than that 1980s version by Dave Stewart) then the collection is worth a punt but just promise me you won't write a phd thesis about it (no not even the track called Sometimes I'd rather be a boy or whatever it is called)
