Product Description

Album Description

Following the runaway success of AVID's earlier release
Ballroom Dancing: The Essential Collection (AVC 896) and a flood of emails
demanding we give him his own CD, we are pleased to present an entire
double CD devoted to the greatest British band leader of the 20th
century...Joshua Alexander Loss, better known as just plain Joe Loss!
We begin our story way back in 1933 with a side from his very first
recording session titled Happy Endings which includes Joe's first signature
tune "Let's Dance At The Make Believe Ballroom."
Here we feature Joe performing with top vocalists of the day Monte Ray and
Chick Henderson as well as his fine instrumental work like Woodchoppers
Ball, Oasis and Southern Fried.
As we discovered with the "Ballroom Dancing" CD Joe became synonymous with
strict tempo dance records and CD2 is rightly made up of these sides
recorded between 1949 and 1956.
Joe continued performing for nearly sixty years before sadly passing away
in 1990 at the age of 80 the same year that he gave up the baton!

Although Joe Loss began leading a band at the tender age of 21, that was in 1930, by which time the first wave of dance band leaders was well established. But by 1933 Joe was broadcasting and had begun recording, and he went on to outlast the rest of them, only laying down his baton in 1990. One of the factors in his longevity was that he saw early on the need to cater also for the growing popularity of ballroom dancing. From 1937 on he kept a foot in both camps by producing a series of records entitled Dancing Time For Dancers.

This Essential Collection reflects that dual approach by concentrating the dance band aspect on the first CD, which opens with Joe's first signature tune, followed by his first recording, "Happy Ending", for Edison Bell Winner. "Fare Thee Well, Annabelle", which was issued on Octacros, is something of a rarity also. Both Monte Rey and Chick Henderson are well represented in this judicious selection, which spans 1933 to 1949, It concludes with "In The Mood", which he adopted as his signature tune later on. By my reckoning five of the songs in this essential collection (including "Song Of India" where Rose Alper's vocal does little to embellish the melody) could have been bettered, but that is to say that the majority have earned their place. Most of the recordings on the second CD date from the fifties, and serve as a reminder of just how good a ballroom band this was. Despite being in strict tempo format, there is nothing predictable about the music, which sparkles thanks to the quality of the arrangements and the brilliance of the orchestra.

I have other Joe Loss CD's, but it weas very nice indeed to listen to both discs in this collection. The old songs some of which were sung during the War, and on Disc two Dancing time for Dancers was superb. I am therefore a very satisfied customer.

Wonderful Music! 11 Nov 2008

This is a superb collection of Joe loss recordings from 1933-1956 with excellent sound quality and beautiful music, primarily highlighted in the first CD.
Every 1930s song grabs you by the heart and spirit and twirls you around and around, so by the time you catch your breath, you realize they just don't make music like this anymore. So enjoy "South of the Border" and "Amapola" sung by Monte Rey, as well as "Change Partners" and "Begin the Beguine" showcased by Chick Henderson. We can all keep alive the romance and whimsical magic of thirties music by owning this CD set. It's wonderful!

Note: If you enjoy music of this era, you will not want to miss the brilliant Ray Noble Orchestra with Al Bowlly as well as the magical music of Hal Kemp, Eddy Duchin, Carroll Gibbons and 1930s Bing Crosby.
