Perhaps best known to younger audiences as the hero of Richard Thompson's classic tribute song Al Bowlly's In Heaven, AVID's latest release in the Essential series features one of the great vocalists of the last century, the aforementioned Mr Al Bowlly. Nearly thirty before he arrived in London in 1928 for a residency at the Savoy Hotel at the request of bandleader Fred Elizalde Al quickly established himself as a major singing star. In late 1930 he came to the attention of Ray Noble and enjoyed a successful collaboration with his band before hooking up with Roy Fox and Decca where his career really took off both in the UK and in the USA. Listen to Al Bowlly sing and you will hear a truly contemporary voice, one that would be equally at home in today's pop world as it was over 70 years ago. Format:Audio CD
This is a distillation of an earlier 3-CD set from Avid, about which I wrote a rave review at the time. It's a fascinating compilation, which makes up a chronological journey through Al's recording career. If you were lucky enough to buy the earlier set then there's nothing here that wasn't issued earlier, but if you missed out then grab this now. It's the ideal introduction to the supreme singer, and excellent value for money.

Well this is my first review of anything that I've encountered/bought on amazon, so here goes! Firstly, I have to say that I'm really very new to this kind of music, having come from a predominantly rock 'n' roll and rock interest background. To be perfectly honest though, I bought this C.D. mainly for the simple reason that I wanted an old recording, any old recording really, of 'South of the Border', which I'd heard playing on an old gramophone in an antiques/Collectibles shop, locally, and which I rather liked. I subsequently discovered that Al Bowlly sang a version of it and that it was on this C.D, which I subequently purchased last week via amazon. Well I am pleased to say that I'm now well and truly hooked on Al and the old British Dance Band sounds! I had previously only vaguely heard of Al Bowlly before but couldn't even name a single song that he'd ever sung! However, listening to this wonderful collection on this C.D. has thoroughly familiarised me with his geat voice and those fantastic, molodious songs of a bye-gone age. It's been a very enjoyable experience indeed and if one finds oneself singing and whistling along to any song, as I have many of these, well then surely it has to have enriched the human condition a little, doesn't it?! So I can honestly say that I've loved every track on this C.D, well ok, maybe with the exception 'Judy', perhaps. But only disliking one out of 52 tracks of nearly 80 minutes-worth of an artiste's work is not bad going for a new-comer, I'd say! So if like me, as a new-comer to this music, you're looking to buy a first C.D. of songs as sung by one of the greatest singers of the great British dance band era, then 'Al Bowlly - The Essential Collection' is an excellent place to start.

I received my collection yesterday.Fabulous! What a bargain... wonderful atmospheric music that epitomizes the time. I'm still discovering the artists that recorded the music that has been the soundtrack to so many of the old movies that i loved to watch with my parents. I'm in my 40's and this collection has given me a hunger for more. It sounds so fresh to me and Al Bowlly has such a lovely, lovely voice. I would urge anyone to buy this collection if you like this style of music...It's essential.
