My main issue with this collection lies with the title – it’s a misnomer. The Britten material available to the amalgamated companies who furnished the contents was fairly limited compared with the huge trove in the vaults of Decca, or even EMI (although now that Warner have taken over the latter, some sets combining their respective output have already started appearing).

Works which are considered central to Britten’s repertoire, such as the song cycles, are totally unrepresented, his chamber music is reduced to his Op.1 and the three Cello Suites (in the only recorded performance which is slow enough to need a second disc), and there are several works outside the main canon, discovered or reconstructed after his death. ‘Essential’ just isn’t the word. If you’re after a basic overview of the composer’s major work, then you’d be better off looking elsewhere – perhaps Decca’s ‘Britten – The Masterpieces’ budget four-pack.
And yet, if you want to expand an existing Britten collection, it’s certainly worth considering – Andrew Davis and the BBCSO put in sterling performances of three of his most performed non-vocal works – ‘The Young Person’s Guide’ (just a tad more relaxed than the composer’s own rather frantic reading), a full-sounding ‘Frank Bridge Variations’, and a powerful ‘Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia’ from ‘Peter Grimes’ the astonishingly assured opera which really put Britten’s name on the map. ‘Biily Budd’, his second full-scale opera is here in the only studio recording of the original four-act version, including a scene where Vere addresses his men which was cut from the opera as we know it today. Conducted by Kent Nagano, it boasts a fine cast including Thomas Hampson and Antony Rolfe Johnson as Budd and Vere.
