Biography

Everyone adores Alison Moyet; the Basildon punk, the high priestess of electronic pop, and the peerless soul singer who has warmed our big British hearts since the early 1980s. But how often do we appreciate the full depth and breadth of her extraordinary career? For the very first time, Alison Moyet - one of pop's greatest survivors – has helped put together the definitive anthology ... Read more in Amazon's Alison Moyet Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

This Essential collection, strategically released to remind the world of the musical greatness of Moyet before the release of her fifth solo album in early 2002 (her first in nearly nine years) and also to coincide with her West End stage debut in "Chicago", once again highlights why Moyet is still one of Britain's best loved divas. The classic tracks are still on here but compared to her number one 1995 anthology Singles, there are some interesting additions and erasures. "Only You" and "Situation" two of her better known tracks with Vince Clarke (Yazoo), have been dropped in favour of the equally influential "Don't Go", but also the rather unfortunate choice of "Winter Kills". "Our Colander Eyes" is an upbeat taster of forthcoming new material, and "Blue" the bubbly Kirsty MacColl-style theme from BBC TV's "Playing the Field" is also featured. Moyet's passionate 1987 cover of "Ne Me Quitte Pas", and her live recording of "There Are Worse Things I Could Do" subtly conclude this "must-have" collection. --John Galilee

Product Description

Import-only compilation from the British Pop and Soul vocalist best known for being the singing half of Synthpop duo Yazoo (or Yaz, as they are known in the U.S.). When Yazoo split after their sophomore album, Moyet continued as a solo act, releasing a handful of albums and some extraordinary singles. This collection contains all the tracks originally available on her Singles Collection and adds six more: Dont Go, Winter Kills, Blue, Our Colander Eyes, Ne Me Quitte Pas and There Are Worse Things I Could Do. With a Yazoo reunion in 2008, interest in all things Alison Moyet is at an all-time high. 20 tracks in all. Sony.

3.0 out of 5 stars Less essential, more contractual obligation 3 Feb 2004
Format:Audio CD
Sony's last attempt to wring some profitability from the Moyet franchise before dumping her as uncommercial, fine thanks for an unorthodox and generous talent. If this album has a justification for existing, barely five years after Singles, it's to remind us what a versatile and fearless vocalist and songwriter Moyet is. From the spare, stripped down tracks of the Yazoo days, through the rather bland mush of her mid-80s megastar period, we get to her present incarnation as a bluesy, jazz-influenced pop vocalist who really knows how to inject soul into sometimes initally unpromising source material. Yet despite the presence of rarities like her impassioned reading of Jacques Brel's Ne Me Quitte Pas and a studio version of live favourite There Are Worse Things I Could Do, plus a couple of new tracks - Our Colander Eyes shows off Moyet's fondness for an oblique lyric style - Essential smacks of the hastily thrown together compilation (the biographical sleeve note sounds like it was written by the office temp from an HR file note) produced to fulfil contractual obligations. Singles offers a better overview for the newcomer - this is Essential for Moyet completists only.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Collection. 11 Feb 2002
Format:Audio CD
This collection contains the highlights of Alison Moyet's career including her time with the synth-pop outfit of the early 80's, "Yazoo". I have all her studio albums to date and can't wait to see her new album (in eight years) come out in 2002. One thing though that I really wish to see happen is releasing an Alison Moyet box set (just like Erasure, or Depeche Mode) bringing together her many excellent extended versions, remixes and non-album B-sides. I was planning on buying some used 12-inch vinyl records from out of print online music vendors but decided to hold my hands in the hope of seeing such a singles box set being released in the near future. Hopefully someone who can do something about this will be sooner or later reading my review and my wish will come true!
