Since McTell's early works have already been endlessly reviewed (and re-issued), suffice it to say that, at 33 tracks, this release will more than meet the needs of most McTell fans. The sound is excellent (these are the Sanctuary re-mastered versions) and the liner notes fairly informative for a budget album.

4 1/2 stars. Recommended.

Essential? Only for the most dedicated McTell fan, who will presumably have have the first 3 albums, which is what this admittedly cheap and well packaged double CD consists of. The problem is that most of the songs are somewhat light and whimsical, apart from covers such as "Come Away Melinda", where McTell's limited vocals are far inferior to, say, Tim Rose's, and don't even have the necessary emotional depth. That's not to say McTell is incapable of fine songwriting and good performance. I'm most familiar with his "You Well-Meaning..." album, where cuts such as "First And Last Man", "Pick Up A Gun", "Old Brown Dog" (despite a couple of flat notes), "Claudia" and the title track are superior to 95% of these tracks. That's the sort of material I was hoping to find here, but I was sadly disappointed. The other 5%? That'll be the played-to-death "Streets of London" and "Spiral Staircase".
