Product Description

Product Description

Hazel Soan is a well-known and popular artist and an enthusiastic and inspirational teacher. In The Essence of Watercolour Hazel shows how wonderfully versatile and beguiling the medium of watercolour is and how to get the most out of it. Hazel stresses how important it is to understand the characteristics of the medium in order to exploit it to the full. She encourages the reader to explore the properties of watercolour and to be unafraid of strength of colour and brushstroke. Hazel shows through demonstration and projects that tone is king in watercolour and illustrates how to paint light with the use of shade. Armed with this understanding she demonstrates that watercolour is not such an unforgiving medium after all: accidents and mistakes can be disguised, overridden and corrected. The Essence of Watercolour is a culmination of many years of Hazel's teaching and demonstrating, in which she offers inspirational insights into the secrets of watercolour painting and encourages artists to take their art to the next level.

A fabulous book.... 20 Jun 2011
Format:Hardcover
Having spent most of my life working in watercolours, I wanted to develop the media in more depth and this book is absolutely superb for this....I didn't need the average watercolour book that gives you the basic level of techniques but wanted to get deeper into the use of them. It covers the use of your brush - holding it loosely; transparent v opaque; laying the paint; building the tones - something I find scary/hard; using the white of the paper; with 'Explore!' pages at the end of each chapter and the most awesome watercolours that could make you want to give up painting for ever but don't as they are so exciting; to know that I can get to that level...maybe!!!!!
So; if you want a jolly good watercolour book this is a must...THANK YOU Hazel Soan your work is an inspiration to us all!!!! Sarah Orchard UK

Inspiring 29 Jun 2011
Format:Hardcover
Written in easy to follow brief paragraphs, I cannot rate this book highly enough. Hazel's use of colours is just amazing, and makes anyone who has tended to use earth colours really sit up and take notice.
I think anyone, from beginner to pro could learn lots from this book. I'm sure I will.
The book is worth it just for Hazels paintings, but offers so much more for anyone willing to take the time.

invaluable 1 Aug 2011
Format:Hardcover
Taught me more in an hour about the characteristics of watercolour than I had learnt in 10 years of struggle. The section on the difference between transparent, semi-opaque and opaque watercolours is particularly useful.

Very disappointing. Nothing new. Some instructions, but not really very well explained. The best picture is the one on the cover of the book.

Not up to Hazel Soans usual standards
This book is not one of Hazels best. I have all her others, and her dvds. In this book I think she overdoes the waxing lyrical about how much she loves painting and how wonderful... Read more
