I bought the Essence Of Artificial Intelligence 6 or so years back, and the section on ANNs was very readable. Based on that, I bought the Essence Of Neural Networks, hoping that it would be just as readable.
The blurb claims to introduce ANNs with the minimum maths necessary, but I found myself quickly overwhelmed whenever maths was produced (it was mostly calculus).
However, the book did introduce some concepts that were easily understood, once the maths was safely ignored.
As a programmer, I found the maths unnecessary (it's the methods themselves that I was interested in), and thought they would have been better left for a more advanced book as one of the easier ones on the subject.
Apart from that, I would still recommend this book.
