Product Description

Product Description

The Essence of Neural Networks is designed to be a first course on neural networks for undergraduate students, with the mathematics contained to a minimum. The book's main aim is to cover the basic concepts, with the key neural network models explored sufficiently deeply to allow a competent programmer to implement the networks in a language of their choice.

The first six chapters cover the main neural models that are essential for a fundamental grounding in the subject, and the last two chapters are devoted to an overview of some of the links being developed between neural networks and traditional AI.

I bought the Essence Of Artificial Intelligence 6 or so years back, and the section on ANNs was very readable. Based on that, I bought the Essence Of Neural Networks, hoping that it would be just as readable.
The blurb claims to introduce ANNs with the minimum maths necessary, but I found myself quickly overwhelmed whenever maths was produced (it was mostly calculus).
However, the book did introduce some concepts that were easily understood, once the maths was safely ignored.
As a programmer, I found the maths unnecessary (it's the methods themselves that I was interested in), and thought they would have been better left for a more advanced book as one of the easier ones on the subject.
Apart from that, I would still recommend this book.

Great book, he explains everything so even someone without a good understanding of maths could understand the field. All his solutions can be mapped to code - proven by research students at Southampton Institute.

excel intro to NN 18 May 2000

Format:Hardcover
A very nice introduction to NN. The maths are explained clearly. It doesn't like many other books about NN which use some highly complicated maths to put you off. It explains the stuffs step by step so it is easy to follow. I got a solid foundation about NN after reading this book! Nice!
