Book Description

Written from the unique perspective of an experienced martial arts instructor, the book is a concise collection of theories that the author knows to work in practise. Throughout, the book is easy to read, and balances a humorous style when telling real life stories which enhances the serious points the author wants to convey.

Therefore, the book is summarised into the basic, intermediate and advanced levels that all readers can pick up the elements quickly and put them to use. There are specific chapters on Kung Fu (Wing Chun), Tai Chi, Karate and Jeet Kune Do. This is a very personal book in which the author details how and why he got into martial arts, through to chapters on real practical life-saving methods, street fighting, self-defence for women, and how to succeed in tournaments. Anyone interested in martial arts will not fail to benefit from this book.

Why you should buy this book:-

Many chapters have insights that some teachers won't tell you. Often they will tell you what works for them, but not explain in detail what will work for you. So what is produced from some Schools, are people who have some individual strengths, but many weaknesses that the training, for whatever reason, does not correct.

This book helps you focus on what is important. It does not go on and on about difficult techniques that you cannot do without proper guidance. This book explains basic and more advanced approaches, simply and methodically.

It is a book any beginner can improve from, and many advanced martial artists can benefit from.

Chapters Include:

Tai Chi - How to harmonise internal energy to turn it into external force
Re-directing your Opponent's Energy - How to beat someone without
throwing a single punch
Kung Fu - How to blow your opponent away, effectively and with relative
Jeet Kune Do - How to use this most unsettling of styles to devastating
Karate - How to use discipline and focus to overcome your opponent
Self Defence Principles for Women - Reasons why women can be
confident against potential attackers
Tournaments and Street Fighting for Real - Putting what you learn into a
real context that tests how much you have learnt

And much more.

More About the Author

John Hennessy is a young adult / new adult novelist whose preferred writing genre is horror, and has authored the Dark Winter series as well as the fantasy epic Stormling.

A huge fan of the paranormal, he will actively visit reported ghost haunts and it could be said that they served as inspiration for his debut fiction novel; Dark Winter: The Wicca Circle.

Inbetween writing Book Two of the series, Dark Winter: Crescent Moon, he released the fantasy epic Stormling, which is the first book of the Mordana Chronicles.

The Blood and the Raven (A Tale of Vampires: II)
Innocent While She Sleeps (A Tale of Vampires: III)
Clara's Song
Dark Winter #3

Stormling (fantasy)
Dark Winter: Crescent Moon (paranormal horror - YA to Adult)
Murderous Little Darlings (A Tale of Vampires: I)

Dark Winter: The Wicca Circle

The Essence of Martial Arts

The first short story he ever wrote brought together Fagan, Lizzie Bennett, Sherlock Holmes and Dracula, which despite impressing his long suffering English teacher, thankfully remains unpublished.

For recreation he will visit paranormal hotspots, but prefers to write about ghosts rather than meet them. He also believes almost any problem can be overcome so long as there is an inexhaustible supply of tea and biscuits. He also has an obsession with Batman and anything Gotham.

In 2015, the short novella horror The Blood and the Raven: A Tale of Vampires, Book Two, the final Dark Winter story will be released, as will a new suspense / horror thriller entitled Clara's Song.

In his own words: "I write because I love to write, create something from nothing. If people love that too, be the few or many, I am delighted to know this, each and every time. I love to connect and hear from fellow authors, readers, anyone who loves books. A writer can never feel lonely if he has this most unique of support groups!"

5.0 out of 5 stars CHANGED MY LIFE 22 Oct. 2014
By paul
I bought this book over 2 and a half years ago .it was a great read and i found myself flying through the chapters and getting more and more into it .I was 45 when i got the book and had just gave up playing amature football in which i played twice a week for years .i was at the stage where i was the oldest in the team and when i got a knock it seemed a lot longer to get normal then it used to . Being self employed i had to turn up for work so it was getting harder and harder to do so.After reading the book from cover to cover i found myself wanting a new challange and something to take the place of my football.Im a weeks away from 48 and im fitter or at least as fit as i was when i was 35 and in better shape . Im also 2 and a half year into jeet kune do a martial art form which i find suits me very well ,im so much more confident than i was ,as i feel stronger faster and fitter in myself .I also know that i could defend myself if i needed too .My whole life has change . all you need is to be a hard working student with a good teacher .I found myself one named John Hennessy the author

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Good, from a man who knows his art 21 July 2012
I enjoyed this book. Its not esoteric, or aimed at the very advanced student, (although the advanced student may still pick up a few nuggets of wisdom), but its a no-nonsense, down-to-earth guide to martial arts, from a down-to-earth author. John is an excellent martial artist, and a very good teacher. I have learnt with several teachers over twenty years, including some very well known people, and John is as good as anyone. I have one-to-one lessons, and have learnt more in a few weeks, than in six months with other teachers. So I highly recommend him, and highly recommend his book, for a good, foundational guide to various martial arts, martial art training, tips on how to train effectively, and an insight into being successful in whichever art you choose. John always has some good stories, if you can distract him from teaching for a moment, and hopefully he'll write more books in the future, where he can share his experiences with a wider audience. He writes as well as he teaches, and I recommend his book.

By the way, he looks pretty serious and scary on the cover, but he's relaxed, friendly and a great guy in reality.

This is not a step by step book on how to do martial arts. Instead it is a wonderful book that is full of tidbits of wisdom on all aspects of martial arts, everything from physical and mental training, excercising, to the strategy and philosphy of martial arts. The book starts with John's personal story and introduction to martial arts and then moves on to various aspects of martial arts; the basics, excercises, conditioning and even self defence principles for women. John then focuses the next several chapters on each of the martial arts that he has learnt and teaches; Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Karate, and Jeet Kune Do.

My children have been learning from John for several years and his passion for teaching martial arts is always evident.

Overall this is a great book that deserves a read if you enjoy martial arts.

This book has been a great accompaniment to my seven year old son's training in Kung Fu. John's background knowledge of the different martial arts is impressive and he writes in such a way that one is inspired to commit to mastering one's chosen martial art. A wonderful read in it's own right, if you want to understand the dedication and wisdom it takes to become a master in your chosen field (whether it be martial arts or not), you must read this book.
