This is a wonderful colletion of Bessie Smith's songs; great for when you're working late nights and in need of good vocal company.

One of a number of unrelated Smiths-Mamie,Clara & Trixie-Bessie Smith was the most famous.
From 1912 she was on the same bills as Ma Rainey as a chorus girl her first recordings issued around 1923.She was equally at home with jazz and Tin Pan Alley standards like Alexander's Ragtime Band but after some 10 years of success her career faced a slump due to the Depression.By 1933 her final single sold just 400 copies.
However her career was to pick up due to her appearance in the Carnegie Hall Concert presented by John Hammond in 1937 but it wasn't to bear fruit as she was killed in a car crash a few months later
Since then millions of words have been written about Bessie Smith.She has never been off the catalog since the 60s
