From Amazon.co.uk

Continuing the trend of making engaging productions out of the concept of a prison break, The Escapist earns extra bonus points by throwing in a meaty role for Brian Cox in the process. He plays Frank Perry, a prisoner who’s 12 years into his sentence with no hope of parole. Yet when his daughter becomes ill, he realises that he needs to be on the other side of the walls, and sets about hatching a plan to make that possible. In short, the break is on…

Naturally, the master plan involves bringing together a mismatch of fellow prisoners to help, and The Escapist then follows their attempts to break out. Standing in their way? Damian Lewis’ sinister turn as Rizza, a threat more potent than any guard.

Grounded on a solid script, The Escapist has plenty in its corner. Debut director Rupert Wyatt (who co-wrote the script) knows not to overcook his ingredients, and thus demonstrates commendably restraint, which really pays off when he needs to ratchet up some menace and tension. And then there’s the cast, led superbly by Brian Cox. Cox deserves far more roles of this quality, because he’s quite magnificent here, single-handedly lifting the film from a firm rental to a must-see.

That said, The Escapist works in many different ways, and proves that Britain can deliver a prison break as compelling and interesting as any Hollywood can offer. An easy recommendation. --Jon Foster

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating from start to finish 4 Aug 2009
Format:DVD
I completely agree with other 5 star reviews of this very well made british film. I randomly caught it on film 4 one evening and was gripped from the very beginning- By the strong cast (especially the convincing and touching performance by Brian cox), the closed-in, locked-up atmosphere of the filming amd set, the convincing feeling of the inablilty to escape from the inevitable (vilonence, sexual assault, drug use) and the strong story line, filled with hope and anticipation.

I will definitely be purchasing this for some friends that I hope will love it as much as I did.

3.0 out of 5 stars ESCAPIST 30 Jan 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Thrills that seemed slow moving , clever story line , yet inspite of superlative acting in parts , expectations prior to putting the DVD in the player were never fully met ! - Sometimes a ploding tale is perhaps the way things would be in true life. However the fantacy world of the movie, at times calls for a faster pace !!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star prison break film 1 Aug 2008
Format:DVD
If you like prison break films this is brilliant. Its got a great british cast featuring Brian Cox, Stephen MacIntosh, Joseph Fienns and Damian Lewis. Lewis is superb in the role of a deranged prison enforcer....

Brian Cox plays a troubled inmate plotting to escape to see his long lost daughter...its a thrilling ride as the plot to escape unfolds. Well worth a watch.

This is a downer of a story so you need to be in the right mood to take it; Hard, ruthless & brutal; Well acted
