third and final volume in a trilogy of fantasy novels called the engineer trilogy. if you havent read the first two - devices and desires and evil for evil - then stop here and go and get them instead. they're very good and you will get more out of this book by reading the whole story in order.

If you have, then read on.

running at 550 pages, this brings an end to the story. the quality of the prose is very good and very readable, and all the characters do have a good depth. Psellus is now in charge of the city and a lot of the story is focused on his attempts to run it's defence. despite his own admission that he's not really up to the job his patient and intelligent attempts to solve his problems are supremely and engrossing and he becomes a highly appealing character, discovering a few things about other characters as well which result in some good twists and turns.

there are good descriptions of siege warfare, and the big picture of nations at war and what is happening to individuals caught up in the middle of things is well done. every character has their own motivation, and they are all driven by them. not everyone gets the resolution they were expecting, but they are all realistic resolutions that arise out of character development.

A good end to a good trilogy, that will make me seek out other works by the writer

Honestly, this series started out so well, but it goes on, and on, and on, and on without ever really going anywhere and all the characters you become attached to turn out to be very nasty, screwed up individuals or dead or both. Pointless waste of time. Which is a shame because in some respects its very well written. If K.J. Parker could get together with Trudi Kanarvan you'd have a well written, compelling story. Sadly this isn't it

Not quite up to the level of his previous Scavenger Trilogy, nonetheless the Engineer books are very well plotted with some excellent ideas and the occasional piece of fine writing. The central theme is an exploration of the romantic idea of the hero turning upside down heaven and earth for love, and the horrific reality that ensues if this is taken through to it's logical conclusion with single-minded obsession and thorough planning.
