Product Description

Product Description

Anime, or Japanese animation, is a true cultural phenomenon, with a fervent and ever-increasing following in the West. Of its many varied categories and genres, none is as endlessly fascinating and controversial as its approach to sex and the erotic. It's an unpredictable and highly charged area that has never been fully explored. Until now. In this pioneering work, the authors consider all aspects of the genre, including its use of comedy and violence, the treatment of women (both as characters and viewers) and, of course, the issue of censorship. The book also includes a detailed A-Z listing of over 200 erotic anime titles. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR YOUNGER READERS.

This book has it all!
It not only provides a commentary on the history of Manga and it's impact on both eastern and western society but also addresses the issues of cartoon pornography that were raised when Manga came to us here in the west.
Another great feature is the comprehensive list of Adult Anime titles in A-Z format which lists not only 'pornographic' films but also films with a slightly adult subtext offering explanations of plot, history etc.
This is a must for any Anime fan!

Forget the lascivious title, this book is a must-have for anime fans everywhere. Written by the former editor of Manga Mania and the current editor of Manga Max magazine, it shows just how much goes on behind the scenes in the anime world. Of particular interest is the chapter on the British media reaction to anime over the years: the facts and figures quoted should be written at the front of every article written about anime. A groundbreaking book, that will set the benchmark for anime criticism for years to come.

A Bit of Humdrum 11 Mar 2004
Format:Paperback
Even if one convinces one's self that their interest in the more lascivious forms of Japanese anime one expects a certain amount of voyeuristic enjoyment of a study of that genre. At least, one would expect to walk away from the book with a deeper understanding of what Japanese eroticism is and how it expresses itself. Unfortunately, McCarthy and Clements book falls far short of being a successful mix of scholorship and entertainment.

While the Erotic Anime Movie Guide provides detailed coverage of much of the dark side of anime and hentai, it is marred by very lackluster writing and a real dearth of illustration. The writers shift back and forth from a form of dry academic philosophizing which borders on an apology for Japanese tastes, to an equally dry reporting of film contents.

This should be a fascinating subject. The Japanese have a very different scale of what is appropriate and what is not and have focused considerable writing, illustrative and musical talent on erotic anime, often hittin very high production standards. This strange little book seems to want to downplay all of that as if uncomfortable with the subject matter.

Hopefully there will be other efforts in the study of this genre that manage to be as compelling as is their subject matter.
