November 16th 2009 was arguably the most important date on a Shaky fan's calendar this year. It was for me anyway as this was the date of the arrival for the long awaited back cataloge CD releases, housed beautifully within the walls of the 'Epic Masters Box Set'. It's not often a release comes along and takes your breath away, but this was certainly one of them.
For too long and cruelly overlooked, the majority of Shaky's 80's & 90's albums have never had a UK CD release. It seems now that this could have been a blessing in disguise, as we may not have had such a remarkable Box Set laid upon us. Take One!, 'Shaky', Give Me Your Heart Tonight and Lipstick Powder & Paint have never had a CD release in the UK. Years of playing vinyl to CDR transfers or inferior Australian releases have now been thankfully put to bed. This Box has arrived and it is a stroke of pure genuis that Shaky personally got involved into what have could been a tired mediocre cash in. The attention to detail with the informative booklet and CD notes, the artwork, the remastering and the bonus tracks prove this was a labour of love. Thank the lucky stars that the artist put so much care into this important collection.
So the question looms... do we still, as fans, remain very much in love with the retro? or is it too much too late with the anticipation? That's two very daft questions as it's impossible not to get excited all over again at these legendary chunks of Shaky magic. Just the decision to house the CDs in their original sleeves with mini vinyl style discs was enough to get the hairs on my neck to stand up. Who would have known that in 2009 we would have such an incredible box set? The buzz has started all over again for me as I place the first CD into the player...
Take One! (Oct 79)
This album originally came to me later due to me being a young lad and only discovering it post This Ole House. For me it's one of Shaky's finest and is very stand out from what albums followed. This album is Country rock and has it's own appeal with it's unique style. The sleeve notes finally confirm to me that the original album was ultimatley mixed by Stuart Colman, Shaky & BJ Cole which was the best desicion as I felt that Mike Hurst's early single productions sounded a bit flat. Shaky's voice is stunning on the tracks but the production let them down. In my humble opinion the bonus tracks included here of the early singles before Hot Dog prove that, and without Stu, Shaky & Cole's remixing, the album would never have sounded as good as it does. The remastering has made the album spring to life and certainly was an enjoyable trip down memory lane for me. This is going to be a CD that will rarely leave the car stereo.
This Ole House (Mar 81)
Next in the player was This Ole House (AKA Marie Marie). This had a UK CD release in 1993 but it never sounded as good as this remastered version. From the striking Hey Mae to the rockin' track Move, to the ultra cool Shooting Gallery to the revived Two Hearts, this album still holds up to today's sound and hasn't dated in the slightest. The remastering make it sound as fresh as it did in 1981. Shaky on top form and musos to die for. Micky Gee shines on this album and his Guitar pickin' is just superb.
Shaky (Sep 1981)
Shaky's biggest No.1 hit album finally gets it's UK debut now in 2009. Remarkable. This album contains arguably Shaky's best penned B-Sides, among of which are Let Me Show You How and Baby, You're A Child. Most fans will agree that those songs got just as much playing as the A-Sides of their counterparts. No wonder Don't She Look Good was introduced back into the live sets recently. Tracks that rock as much as that should never be forgotton! Nice to see the B-Side of It's Raining added too to the CD. It's the details like that that makes this Box Set so special.
Give Me Your Heart Tonight (Oct 1982)
I remember buying this album first time around on vinyl vividly. I had no idea what I was in store for with the content, as the sleeve at the time made me think that this could be a smooth crooning LP or maybe the cover photo was directly from Shaky being pubilcized as the next James Bond. I couldn't have been more wrong. This album totally rocks with banging songs like Sapphire, Josephine, You Never Talked About Me and Vanessa. The title track for me still remains as my favourite Shaky ballad of all time. The other beauty of this Epic Masters version is the inclusion of the important B-Sides, especially the 7" I'll Be Satisfied flip side Don't Be Late (Miss Kate). If ever a double 'A' single was more deserved then that was it. Also making it's CD debut here is another Shaky penned B-Side Thinkin' Of You, which was recently voted best B-Side ever on a popular fans website.
The Bop Won't Stop (Nov 83)
This was the first CD release I ever bought of Shaky's way back in 1984. It has been brought to life again with an excellent remastering which has made me sit up and listen again to the likes of As Long As and Livin' Lovin' Wreck. The strings on A Love Worth Waiting For and the Live atmosphere of Lawdy Miss Clawdy sound better than ever. I'm over the moon at the included extra of the European single Your Ma Said You Cried. I remember reading somewhere that Shaky was never 100% happy with the finished version of this track. He need not have worried, especially with this remastered version, as it totally rocks.
Lipstick Powder & Paint (Nov 85)
Probably the most anticipated Shaky CD release ever has now after nearly 25 years made it's CD debut. The Dave Edmunds production is excellent here and tracks like Turning Away and With My Heart will always remain as fan's favourites. To finally hear this great album remastered on a real CD was like having a new release in my hand. To include the original B-Side version of You Shake Me Up was a dream come true as My Teardrops 7" was played to death and never did quite recover. I'll Give You My Heart (Remix version included here) is also one of my all time fav B-Sides.
Let's Boogie (Dec 87)
An unusual album but still sounding great is Let's Boogie. The Live Medley takes me back in time and again sounds better than ever. I always felt that A Little Boogie Woogie and Come See About Me were underated as singles. I still enjoy listing to them both. The B-Sides now included are two of Shaky's greatest. Tell Me One More Time is easily as good as the A-Side Because I Love You and If You're Gonna Cry sounds more crisp than ever before.
A Whole Lotta Shaky (Dec 88)
Arriving a year after Let's Boogie, AWLS was a selection of new and old tracks. Not one of Shaky's greatest albums by far, but you can't deny how brilliant the cover versions are. Jezebel is excellent, especially the now included Art Of Noise remix, Shaky's take on The Hollies' Just One look and Rocky Burnette's Tired Of Toein' The Line made this album a definate for the collection. The remastered CD also contains a few surprises for the fans with sharp ears... The track Woman (What Have You Done To Me) is a complete new mix and great improvement on the original Lp version. How Many Tears is the PWL Pete Hammond mixed CD Single 7" Version and Hello Josephine now has a end and not the original fade out. The bonus tracks are great too with the 'shoulda been an A-Side' Come On Little Girl (Chrome Sitar). Wonderful!
There Are Two Kinds Of Music...Rock n' Roll (Oct 90)
Probably the weakest album here but still as important is this CD platter from the early nineties. The songs are great but the production has dated badly. The polished electronic sound has not been kind to the ears now in 2009. Without a doubt PWL (Stock Aitken & Waterman) were the biggest hit makers out there at the time. Trouble is, all their other artist's hits sound dated now too and unfortunatley the same goes for this album. Like I said earlier, the songs are fine and you only have to compare the squeeky clean album version of Love Attack to the now included thumping 7" Version (which was co-produced by Shaky) to hear what I mean. I'd love to hear the album tracks produced like the older stuff. Songs like Rockin' The Night Away always sounded better live. Both versions of the single Radio (featuring Roger Taylor & Rod Argent) are now included on the remastered CD which still have that contemporary feel. The Bonus tracks are not PWL produced.
The 12" CD
What a surprise bonus CD to have included! I take my hat off to Shaky and gang for realizing how important and brilliant these 12" versions are. It's nice to finally have them on CD and they are perfect for in the car for those long motorway journeys. The Boogie Mix of A Little Boogie Woogie brought back memories for me. I first heard this 12" version at a hotel night club in Ibiza! I was 17 at the time... my goodness...has it really been that long?
So all in all, If you haven't bought this once in a lifetime set then do it now! The price is a snip for the value that is present here!
I would like to thank Shaky and everyone at SONG for making this Box Set a reality. It's the best gift to the fans ever.
If you think you've heard this retro stuff before then think again. I Guarentee you have never heard the Shaky back cataloge as good as this.
Get it NOW! You won't regret it...
