"Sarah Jane Downing... has assembled a large variety of pleasure garden images that I have not seen before, and written about the topic in a clear and readable style that was loaded with information. By Green Knight TOP 500 REVIEWER

Well, we all know Shire Publications - they've been around for years: those little paperback volumes full of handy potted history about specific bits and pieces of social and economic history, and crammed with well-chosen pictures.

This volume: THE ENGLISH PLEASURE GARDEN 1660-1860 is no exception to the high quality of the publisher's catalogue. A pretty big subject has been expertly distilled in Sarah Jane Downing's well-researched, lively and informative text, and is contained in a nicely-produced and copiously illustrated sixty-four pages. It is well worth the published price - let alone the even more reasonable variations to be found on Amazon.

All the English pleasure gardens are here from Ranelagh and Vauxhall to the less well-known gardens at Norwich and Liverpool - and they come complete with a colourful cast of pleasure-seekers, from the Prince Regent and Horace Walpole to Spinacuti's Monkey (yes, really) and the infamous Dick Turpin. Dancers, singers, acrobats and musicians rub shoulders with thieves, philanderers and prostitutes, and all things considered this little book is tremendous addition to anyone's library.

To be enjoyed.

No sources? No use. 5 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
Finding basic information about 18th-century pleasure gardens is not necessarily easy to do, and this small book is a real gift in that regard--it outlines the history of these sites briefly and intelligently. The text is only aided by the liberal supply of images accompanying it.

Horrifyingly, however, the book--chock full of drawings, quotes, and figures--contains no citations. None. There is not even a list of resources at the back. This is irresponsible at the least, and it's also deeply disappointing to anyone who--like me--is looking for a concise but credible source. As far as I can tell, the information is legitimate--but with no bibliography, it's just not academically acceptable. The only way I can make use of this book in the way I *hoped* to is to search out the original sources online, one at a time--basically, doing the author's job over again. That's a real pity, when adherence to some basic standards would have made this a very useful little book.

A slim volume but ample introduction 1 Oct 2009
By Laurel Ann - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This slim volume is brimming with historical information on the creation and evolution of the popular Pleasure Gardens in England. Originally designed as a diversion for the rich, Pleasure Gardens such as Vauxhall Garden in London and Sydney Gardens in Bath not only featured beautifully landscaped walks and vistas, but halls for music and dancing. Given the size limitations of this book, it is a nice introduction to a topic that will appeal to historical fiction readers and history students. My one disappointment is that the lovely vintage images are not credited. Otherwise, the author's research is impressive, taking the reader back to a time when the social scene meant putting on your best frock and leaving the house instead of poking your friends on Facebook.
