Book Description

1 Jun 2004
Poet John Glassco wrote a great many unusual and eccentric works during his career, and ranks among the finest Canadian authors of the 20th Century. This particular title, published under the pseudoym "Miles Underwood," has achieved status as a must-have in your BDSM library. It is the account of Harriet Marwood, summoned to tutor the son of a 19th Century Victorian businessman, Arthur Lovel, whose wife has died, in the proper way to conduct himself, and to quit what is wonderfully termed "self-effacing." Our Ms. Marwood soon takes over the house, leaving the businessman free to consort with Kate, his whore, and the boy, young Richard, at her mercy, where he most wants to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Classic Of Female Domination 15 Jun 2007
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a slightly confusing book, in that it is another version of 'Harriet Marwood, Governess' (HMG). In both, Miss Marwood is tasked with training her young charge using painful chastisement and humiliation. Unless both are read quite carefully, they might be taken to be the same book, as the opening pages are identical and most of the characters are identical, but in fact the books are very different. 'The English Governess' (EG) is by far the more erotic, to the extent that it is possible that the other book is a rewrite for more sensitive folks. HMG is coyly vague about the character defect of the governess' pupil, Richard, but here it is forthrightly stated as masturbation. This difference leads to one of the best erotic chastisement scenes in the work being the consequence of stealing chocolate, rather than a nocturnal episode of solitary playfulness which has left unmistakeable traces in his bed. HMG also omits all mention of the relationship between Richard's father and his young mistress, which leads to some of the more erotically attractive episodes in the book. Some compensation for these omissions is offered in HMG by inclusion of a situation in which Richard's attempt at a relatively normal relationship is wrecked when Miss Marwood beats Richard noisily in a beach hut, in the young lady's presence. EG is by far the better book, maintaining the air of dominance and loving subservience necessary for credibility in the plot. It should be said, however, that both books have sufficient merit to be considered classics of the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Femdom Classic From 1960! 11 Aug 2012
By M. J. Rennie - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase

By John Glassco (pseudonym Miles Underwood)

One of the troubling issues regarding artistic content on the internet is that practically anyone can post a review of a work and it will instantly be viewable worldwide. Even the most ignorant or ax-grinding reviewer can let his or her opinion be known, often with the volume of an air raid siren.

In many cases, this is not necessarily a bad thing.

In some cases, however, it is unfortunate.

Particularly vulnerable to ignorant opinion are unusual masterworks of the past, whose skill and style are misunderstood by modern TV and media-drenched audiences.

Such is the case with the previous review of the Kindle version of the classic Femdom novel, THE ENGLISH GOVERNESS.

Published in 1960, this early example of the Femdom genre was written under a pseudonym by the renowned Canadian poet, John Glassco. This outstanding novel, which retains every bit of its peculiar power today, is a superbly crafted erotic tour de force.

The novel tells of a compulsively masturbating youth--Richard "Smuggy" Lovel--who is commended to the care of Harriet Marwood, a forbidding yet curiously affectionate governess. Featuring stern punishments and ecstatic climaxes alike, the book hits all the right notes, in deceptively smooth, vivid prose.

It has, as all romances must, a happy ending. It remains the greatest of all Femdom novels.

Glassco's work is today greatly admired by fans of the Femdom genre for its brilliant depiction of the relationship between an older, dominant woman and a much younger, eagerly submissive man. The situations and practices that characterize such relationships are effectively codified in Glassco's masterpiece for the first time ever in literature.

Make no mistake. THE ENGLISH GOVERNESS is not only an historic work of erotic fiction, on a par with STORY OF O, TROPIC OF CANCER, MARITAL CONFIDENCES, and THE PEARL, it is excellently written and deliciously sensual, a treat for open-minded adult readers everywhere.

This Kindle edition, now published by Dundurn of Canada, is complete, error-free, and an absolute bargain at only $7.69.

Highly recommended for lovers of Femdom erotica.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jessie Scott- 24 Feb 2010

It was poorly written and it did not not keep my attention in most of the book. Will not buy another one like that. It did not cover anything like the title said it would.
