Product Description

From coast to coast, the English landscape is still richly studded with castles both great and small. As homes or ruins, these historic buildings are today largely objects of curiosity. For centuries, however, they were at the heart of the kingdom's social and political life. "The English Castle" is a riveting architectural study that sets this legion of buildings in historical context, tracing their development from the Norman Conquest in 1066 through the civil wars of the 1640s. In this magnificent, compellingly written volume, which includes over 350 illustrations, John Goodall brings to life the history of the English castle over six centuries. In it he explores the varied architecture of these buildings and describes their changing roles in warfare, politics, domestic living, and governance.

John Goodall's book on the English Castle is set to become THE classic study. As someone who has studied medieval architectual history as a postgraduate, I've read previous works by Goodall - particularly his castle guides for English Heritage. He is an accomplished academic who is also architectual editor for Country Life magazine. He has an immense knowledge of the subject and the book is beautifully and engaging written with wit, verve and intelligence. I'm used to architectural history books being written in a dull and technical way, assuming much knowledge on the part of the reader - but this new study, aims to bring the subject alive for both general reader and specialist, with telling anecdotes, artfully described historical background and copious illustrations. Immensely readable, intellectually sound and provocative. Highly recommended.

MAGNIFICENT 8 May 2011
Format:Hardcover
This under-promoted book is a magnificent survey by a serious author. There appear to have been surprisingly few reviews of what is a significant work. This will automatically become a standard work. The text is lucid, yet erudite. The production standards are very high indeed with superb photographic and graphic images. There are very few competitors and on can only hope that Scottish and Welsh volumes will follow.

As an avid reader of "sound" history books - the sort that are fact based and devoid of literary licence - I found this work an absolute treasure. Beautifully illustrated (with diagrams, cut-away images and photographs) most in full colour. The principal chapters run chronologically and the entire content meticulously researched and superbly written. Even the modest (quantitatively speaking) remains of my "local" Tutbury Castle, 800 yards down the road from where I'm writing this, gets full coverage. Half of a stone (weight!) of pure pleasure.
