John Goodall's book on the English Castle is set to become THE classic study. As someone who has studied medieval architectual history as a postgraduate, I've read previous works by Goodall - particularly his castle guides for English Heritage. He is an accomplished academic who is also architectual editor for Country Life magazine. He has an immense knowledge of the subject and the book is beautifully and engaging written with wit, verve and intelligence. I'm used to architectural history books being written in a dull and technical way, assuming much knowledge on the part of the reader - but this new study, aims to bring the subject alive for both general reader and specialist, with telling anecdotes, artfully described historical background and copious illustrations. Immensely readable, intellectually sound and provocative. Highly recommended.
