Format: Hardcover
122 different varieties of apples grown in England are described, in both everyday terms and technical detail. Not just the fruit, but the habit of the particular tree, vigour and pollination details (as important when choosing which varieties you want in your garden as the choice of rootstock)are all outlined. Each variety is illustrated with a particularly beautiful watercolour showing fruit, blossom and leaf. Two varieties are shown to a page, facing the text for those two varieties.

There is little more to the book. An introductory section helps if you are trying to identify a variety you already have. The index is, eccentricly, tucked inconspicuously away at the front - for some time I thought it didn't have one! This book is indeed beautiful, but not an exceptional collector's item. It is useful and interesting to anyone concerned with heritage apple varieties.

Beautifully illustrated on matt paper. This earlier publication has a different format to the more recent edition and is, in my opinion, a superior book. The new version is printed on gloss paper and the text has been abbreviated. Obviously, the more recent edition has the advantage of being far cheaper (it is getting expensive to get hold of a copy of the earlier version); it is just such a shame that the publisher decided to re-launch the book in an inferior format.

Beautiful pictures, good information, easy to read and the apples are listed by using time which is brilliant. Obviously there are a number of ways you could list the apple but I found this method great. The pictures are incredible and really helps in ID'ing your apples.

With out doubt the best book ever written on the history and identification of the English apple, wonderful paintings and discriptions.Make sure you get one of the earlier copies printed on matt paper much far superiour to the later books printed on gloss paper.

This book is worth every penny spent £260. I didn't realise that I could get it again in such perfect condition. I will use this book as a point of reference regarding the hobby of painting still life that I have. Thank you.
