Product Description

Product Description

An Inspector Carlyle Novella.

Yorkshire, June 1984: War is raging between the police and striking mine workers. New recruit John Carlyle is sent up from London to man the picket lines. But when seventy-eight year old rose grower and political activist Beatrice Slater is found dead, the young constable's tour of duty takes a dramatic turn. With the internal security service watching his every move, local police chief Rob Holt is under pressure to make a quick arrest. Carlyle finds himself drawn into a murder investigation that gets more complicated by the day. Was Slater's death a robbery gone wrong? Or was she silenced because of her support for the strike?

5.0 out of 5 stars A walk down memory lane with Inspector Carlyle 7 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This short story takes us back to the heart of the 1984 as we catch up with a young Constable Carlyle fresh out of training and thrust into the bubbling cauldron of the miner's strike.

Fans of the inspector Carlyle novels will recognise a few characters who feature heavily in the later novels. We can see how those relationships were formed and this look into his early years as a copper give us a glimpse under Carlyle's skin.

The story itself is laden with the usual ambiguity that is becoming identifiable as a James Craig trademark. It's very much a mood piece and as someone of a similiar age to the author, the story took me back very vividly to the time in the mid-eighties when and I and many other people my age were politicised for the first time.

It's clear that the author had almost as much fun putting together the music playlist that accompanies this kindle edition. I pressed the button and listened along on Spotify as I read and I suspect the nostalgia will be swimming around my head for days.

If you're a fan of the Inspector Carlyle novels then this is the perfect snack to keep you going before the next fulll length book is published. It's the perfect way to while away an hour and revel in some full on eighties reminiscing.

I think Inspector Carlyle is very well suited to this short story format and I hope the author decides to do more of these in the future.

An interesting early view of Carlyle's career in the police.
Set during the miners strike with some sinister side issues.

3.0 out of 5 stars An also ran 2 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this book a bit tedious to read.
No satisfactory conclusion.
I didn't know any of the characters before reading this "novella" and it didn't make me keen to learn more.
Pity I remember the miners strikes very well and it could have been much more gripping.
Seemed as if it was written to a formula
Only finished it as hoped it would "pick up"
Disappointing

3.0 out of 5 stars Simply a blurb 14 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Easy and quite enjoyable reading but far too many issues raised but not followed - ie there is too much content for the novella format. It's just a trailer for later work(s) I feel exploited.

2.0 out of 5 stars Another boring read
Too many characters, not enough plot. I had to keep going over what I'd read, just to confirm who was who.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read
Enjoyed the book but it was very short and the ending wasmfrustrating. The Usual excellent writing and very believable characters.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read
Good book, nice easy read. Good bit of historical based fiction. Predictable in places, but nevertheless still a nice read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but too short
If you want a background on Carlyle, this is for you. A short story to give you an idea about why he has such animosity to some characters in later novels.
