Product Description

In Boston he is known as Chase Remington, a bitter outsider, heir to a socially prominent dynasty that hides secrets more shocking than his own bastardy and half-breed blood. To fulfill the last wish of his mother, he returns to the High Plains, becoming the White Wolf, a fierce Cheyenne raider, protecting his father’s people from the whites who would destroy them.

Stephanie Summerfield is a Boston heiress who has loved Chase since childhood. Her engagement to him sends shock waves through society, especially when he vanishes mysteriously after his mother’s death. Alone, her reputation in shambles, she weds a mercenary Baltimore cavalry officer and attempts to rebuild her life in the far West…until she is kidnapped by the infamous White Wolf.

In the Valley of the Greasy Grass, Chase and Stephanie learn what the Powers have decreed. They are destined to be lovers…if they can survive the vengeance of her brutal husband, the twisted hate of his uncle, and the attacking Seventh Cavalry led by the Long Hair, Custer. See the Battle of the Little Big Horn through the eyes of the Indians who were the ultimate victims

I've found Shirl Henke's work to be a bit patchy in quality; this is one of my favorites. It's a fairly dark book, not surprising given its setting in the middle of the wars between Native Americans and whites in the American West after the Civil War. The main characters are both believable and likeable, the sex scenes are nicely torrid, as is Henke's habit, and the action keeps you turning pages till it is over.

2.0 out of 5 stars Chic- lit? 6 Aug. 2014

I have always enjoyed a good western, but on the other hand, I have never read a Mills and Boone romance. I guess the cover art should have warned me, this was more the latter, or what I understand the latter to be , than the former.

Historical accuracy was about 7 out of 10. Story line and characterisation were not bad, if a little ( a lot ) hard to believe. Hero meets childhood sweetheart and falls in love but because he is if mixed blood he decides to leave her to return to his native roots. She marries his enemy, is kidnapped by him and falls in love again only to have it all go wrong before the inevitable happy ending. A bit predictable.

I read a number of reviews before buying. I disagree that it gives a one sided portrayal and is anti white American or pro Native American. I guess it is a bit dismissive of Custer and in truth it talks more of white atrocities than of those perpetrated by Indians but that is inevitable given the storyline. I am quite certain it was not meant to be a serious expose of evil white men - if it was it failed.

Really I think this could best be described as chic lit. If part of a series, which it seems to be, I won't be buying the rest. If you are looking for a mildly racy period romance with a slightly unusual setting then this may be for you. If, like me you wanted a western, give it a miss.

This was my very first outing with author Shirl Henke. Written against the backdrop of Custer's Last Stand at the Little Bighorn, this was an excellent read.
