The End is a story that has never been told before and, as the era of an all-seater Premier League dawns, it won't be told again. The End is an oral history of Arsenal's famous North Bank terrace from which generations of supporters have cheered and bemoaned the fortunes of one of the world's most famous football teams. Eighty years of history - football of course, but the stories, too, of families and friends, fights and passions, heroes and villains, the best and worst of the Great Saturday Afternoon Adventure - is told in the words of the fans who have breathed passionate (and economic) life into Highbury since before the First World War.

This book is a collection of interview with Arsenal fans up to 1992. It is utterly compelling, fascinating and full of anecdotes...funny, tragic and thrilling. Rather than a history of the club, it therefore highlights the social changes that affected fans in each decade. From the increasing ease of away travel, to growing player stardom, to mutli ethnic London, to hooliganism and the introduction of all-seater stadia...everything is here. Most fans are just normal supporters but a few ex players and famous faces comment too. I recommend this book to all Arsenal fans as a brilliant read, and to other supporters who are interested in the social relevance of what it means to be a football fan.
A really in depth view of what it has been like to support Arsenal since the early days of the club. The eyewitness accounts which dominate the book break up the flow a bit but are far more authentic and readable than the usual historical summaries. There is plenty of narrative context provided as well. As an Arsenal fan only since the early 70's it really made me appreciate the tradition we are part of. Most football fans would get something out of this book as Arsenal were such a key part of of the development of football in this country.
