Review

One of the many virtues of David Marquand's The End of the West, a book that carefully documents the gap between the EU's ambitions and its achievements, is that it explains exactly why EU politics are so tedious. . . . [I]t provides a crisp and relevant analysis of the difficult choices that Europe faces. (Henry Farrell The Nation )

A sweeping new assessment of the continent's drift. . . . (The Guardian )

[Marquand] the grand old pro-European is on to something when he pokes an inquiring finger into the question of what modern Europe wants to be. . . . [T]his highly readable book offers a compelling description of Europe's modern malaise. (Anne McElvoy New Statesman )

One of the many virtues of David Marquand's The End of the West, a book that carefully documents the gap between the EU's ambitions and its achievements, is that it explains exactly why EU politics are so tedious. . . . [A] crisp and relevant analysis of the difficult choices that Europe faces. (Henry Farrell The Nation )

The End of the West is a bracing and timely work, no doubt about it. (European Voice )

A committed pro-European's brilliant, timely analysis of what is wrong with the European Union. (Vernon Bogdanor Times Higher Education Supplement )

The End of the West is a wake-up call. It raises many questions and calls for drastic changes in the EU government. . . . Marquand gives us a concise and brilliant analysis of the failures and weaknesses of the EU. Readable and compact, this book helps us understand the reasons behind the present problems affecting the EU. (Arab News )

This is a text with compelling questions, not one with definite solutions. What makes it fascinating is the forthright and dispassionate examinations of crucial problems. As Europe faces, in the months and years ahead, the formidable tribulations generated by the global downturn, it is the wider issues delineated in Marquand's The End of the West that should be probed, examined and argued with. (Donald Sassoon Political Quarterly )

This brief but trenchant contribution to the vast literature on the European Union stands out through the author's imaginative way of setting the EU's current dilemmas and tribulations firmly in the context of Europe's cultural and historical heritage as a whole. He offers specific solutions only to some of today's huge problems, but in general he indicates most constructively the lines on which solutions should be sought. (Roger Morgan Times Higher Education )

In this well-written book, Marquand poses several challenges to the leaders of the EU. Realizing that a much weaker European power faces rising major powers in the East, mainly China and India, Marquand encourages European peoples and politicians to critically analyze and come to terms with the major issues that confront them, including Islamophobia, immigration, the resurrection of the old ethnicities, and, above all, their ethnocentrism. With one important caveat, I highly recommend this book by David Marquand. The writer combines an impressive grasp of European politics and history with keen analysis, presenting a number of insights that seem genuinely new or innovative. The style is readable and even enjoyable; Mr. Marquand practices what he preaches by seeking to make EU affairs accessible to a wider audience. Taken as a whole, I found the book very interesting and am currently reading it for the second time.

The important caveat is - perhaps surprisingly - that this book is too Euro-centric, given Mr. Marquand's key claim that the days of the (alleged) global superiority of "Western liberal values" is now clearly over. Evidence for this is lacking; occasional references to the rise of India and China are not sufficient to sway the reader. Indeed, the 2011 "Arab Spring", an event of historical importance on Europe's southern doorstep, arguably supports the counter-claim that western-style democracy and personal freedoms are still shining beacons for many ordinary people.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Musings... 8 April 2012
By Yoda - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book, written by a leading academic in Political Science and former Member of Parliament, is not an academic book on the subject but instead can be described as the musings of an academic on the European integration. The author presents his views on the current state of the European community, its expansion, the impact of the current financial crisis on it, both politically and economically and his prospects on the future. With respect to many of his views, many would disagree with. For example, he blames xenophobia in many of the European community's nations on racism while the reality seems to, instead, be fear of cultural destruction and/or the high unemployment rates. Despite these problems, the author puts forth many views that are worthy of note.

As the national boundaries of the last two centuries have become less prominent, and as the threat of war on the European continent has evaporated, the always-artificial nation-states of Europe have begun to unravel, "e;

Almost all Union legislation is now subject to “co-decision” between the Parliament and the Council of Ministers—meaning that the Parliament’s legislative powers are now equal to those of the member governments. By an extraordinary paradox, in short, dwindling turnout has gone hand in hand with growing power. "e;

The Westphalian states of Europe are subject to three disorientating sets of pressures—to those of neo-medieval provincialism from below, and to those of Europeanization and globalization from above. "e;
