All of the series of diaries are an insight into modern politics. A view of politics from one who grew and thrived in the furnace that is Britain today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inside The Mind Of A Dissenter 25 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback
The 1980s were one of the most colourful eras in British politics. This was politics at its most brutal, raw and ideological, with the culmination of the battle between the state and the individual (the state won) and the sad defeat of trade unionism. These diaries allow us to step inside the mind of a dissenting figure - that is, a dissenter against the ruling party and his own party, not to mention the emerging social orthodoxy.

As he wrote these diary entries, Benn's political power was already gone: that is to say, his time in government was behind him. The crucial turning point in Benn's career and also perhaps in British political history was the 1981 Labour deputy leadership challenge - covered fully in these diaries - which Benn lost, so signalling the defeat of the moderate democratic socialist Left.

Benn charts all the relevant events and the beginnings of Labour's 'modernisation' with a jaundiced but perceptive eye. Well worth reading.
