Product Description

Product Description

Since its first publication in 1995, the Encyclopedia of Jewellery Making Techniques has been devoured by students borrowing a well-thumbed copy from their college library, established jewellers wishing to find out more about new techniques, as well as all those who just enjoy making jewellery as a hobby, who have kept it beside their workbench at home as a third hand to help them through a tricky process. Since then many books have been written about jewellery making. However, this volume still enjoys a huge following. To update it, a finished example now illustrates every technique to give a context to the method described. There are also new articles on harvesting scrap metal, designing jewellery, comparing metals' properties, and a wonderful demonstration of precious metal clay - a material that didn't even exist when this book was first published. Doyenne of metal clay, Sue Heaser, gives a masterclass in this technique. Jewellery making is a rewarding and fascinating craft. Although you may find that you enjoy some aspects of it more than others, the techniques described here will give you a thorough understanding of all the basic information you need to create unique and professional looking pieces.

Beginners Perspective 11 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
I saw the earlier version of this book when I was on a silversmithing course and I thought then that it had a good spread of information for the beginner. Although this is an updated book there is not enough new material to warrant buying the latest book if you have the earlier version.

Tools are covered in good detail and there is loads of techniques shown in step by step photo format but I thought that if I had not had a little experience I might have struggled to put into practice some of these as the techniques do not quite go into enough detail and the self taught beginner may also struggle.

There is enough for the more experienced in the book going into quite advanced techinques but again, more to wet the appetite as I would want to research in more detail how to do the techniques explained but overall the book is well written with excellent quality pictures everywhere and explanations are aplenty when jargon is used.

By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This is a revised and updated edition and the only edition I have seen. It includes all the information you need on all aspects of jewellery making. The format is concise, practical and thorough. Suitable for beginners to the experienced, although you might need more detailed information on advanced techniques. It would benefit enormously from a resources guide and more examples of work. It is similar in many respects to another of Jinks Mcgrath's books published by another company. Excellent if you don't have any other book by this author. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

I bought this with the intention of beginning a course in jewellery making. It is very detailed and interesting to read but I have to say that it deterred me from going down that route because the art is very complex. If your serious about the subject though - this book is to be recommended
