I've just received Rose Collis' New Encyclopaedia of Brighton having thoroughly enjoyed the original 10 years ago.

The new version is an absolute must for any one who loves Brighton & Hove - whether resident or visitor. The author has a keen eye and a sharp wit. I'm only at 'D' and each day I feel inspired to jump on a bus to go see some of the interesting areas she has describes.

10/10 - *****

Having just purchased The NEW Encyclopaedia of Brighton,i must say that i am totally impressed with the wealth of information & unknown facts about my home town that emerged whilst reading this book.
Praise must be heaped on Rose Collins for the amount of research she must have gone through in writing this book. Its a worthy book companion to Tim Carders original masterpiece....

I'd just like to say that although the criticisms of Mr T Harvey are valid, this interesting and informative book is worth more than one star.

I'd also take issue too with some of the photographs, there's one of North St which is used twice and is that really a photo of Martha Gunn who died in 1815?

Nevertheless I recommend this book to anyone interested in B&H.

This is a great coffee table book which you can dip into now and again. As one of the previous critics states, it is not for the serious historian, but this is surely a commercial piece rather than a thesis. It is a collection of superficial historical anecdotes which anyone from Brighton would find very interesting. These anecdotes may stimulate you to do further research if you want to be serious about it. I never knew that there was a grave for a Brighton man who fought with General Custer for example.
Previous critics also complain that the book doesn't have much about Hove - well just read the title - it's THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF BRIGHTON.

Have just got my copy of the New Encylopedia of Brighton updated by Rose Collis.
What a wonderful book full of well known facts and quirky info on the area. There are quotes from many historic names that add a great aside to the a to z info - both a wonderful read for residents and visitors to the city, and a great pick up and check coffee table book, it has sparked many conversations between friends about subjects in the book and titbits about the town we love. Well done Rose!!

Despite being updated after Hove was merged with Brighton, this is literally just about Brighton. Also, as other reviewers say, not particularly comprehensive and weirdly patchy even then.
