Rosamunde Pilcher's The Empty House is another heartwarming story about how a widow, Virginia Kelie returns to Cornwall with her children and how whilst there she meets again the handsome farmer she left behind all those years ago. Once again, Rosamunde Pilcher manages to makes us all laugh and cry and experience many emotions. The Empty House is a book which one surely shouldn't miss!

As a long-standing devotee of Rosamunde Pilcher I was not disappointed with this novel.
She has a particular style and her writing is a joy to read - also, of course, she tells a good
story. In paperback, it is particularly good for reading in bed or slipping into the handbag
for quiet moments when left waiting!

Rosamunde Pilcher has written some truly memorable books-The Shell Seekers, Coming Home, Winter Solstice, September. Proper page-turners, with good depth of characterisation, and excellent description. Books where one was sad to leave the characters behind. Alas, not this sorry little tale about a young girl thwarted out of her first love by an ambitious mother, marrying a "rotter" at her behest, and finally returning to Cornwall to meet-up with "the hero" once more, and live happily ever after. Not only is the story so trite and weak, but it is also so dated. Hard to believe that, even as late as 1973, the hero and heroine would light-up cigarette after cigarette.
Sorry Rosamunde!

Not exactly a memorable plot-line, unlike some of Pilcher's other novels, but still very enjoyable. The story revolves around Virginia, recently widowed, who is taking a break with an old friend in Cornwall. All she wants is a quiet, simple existence with her children in a relaxed environment.

This book is a sort of growing-up for Virginia as she starts to take control of her life. There's also - perhaps inevitably - a very low-key romance, with flashbacks to the past, both in her late teens and during her marriage.

Nothing special, nothing to stand out, and if Rosamund Pilcher wasn't such a well-known author, this book probably wouldn't still be in print. Yet it's a delightfully told story, with the people totally believable, right down to Virginia's two small children. Recommended to anyone who wants a couple of hours of gentle escapism without anything challenging.

Re-read in 2014 and it felt like a new book all over again. It's not a bad thing to be unmemorable!
