Product Description

A chilling ghost story, set at Bisham Abbey, from this award-winning author.

Sam, Floss and their foster brother, Magnus, spend their holidays with cousin M. at The Abbey. On their first night, Magnus hears a woman crying and when he goes to investigate he discovers that the sixteenth-century portrait of Lady Alice Neale, hung in the Great Hall, is now just an empty frame. Magnus shares his secret with the others and soon they are drawn into a web of family mystery and murder.

Ann Pilling has written a mystery novel of subtle twist and movement; fascinating historical detail entwined with a familial story which will tug at the heart-strings.

From the Back Cover

"The picture was enormous, dwarfing all the others. She was dressed all in black except that a long white stole was draped around her neck and fell on both sides to the hem of her dress. She held long black gloves and there was a little dog at her feet which, like her hands, looked impossibly thin and narrow. 'She has cruel hands,' he said as the portrait disappeared into the shadow, 'they're like spikes.'"

Sam, Floss and their foster brother, Magnus are sent to an old abbey to spend their summer holidays with cousin Maude. On their first night, Magnus hears a woman crying and when he goes to investigate, Magnus discovers that the sixteenth-century portrait of Lady Alice Neal, hung in the Great Hall, is now an empty frame. Where is the lady? Magnus shares his secret with the others and soon they are drawn into a web of family mystery and murder.

'Ann Pilling has written a ghost story of subtle twist and movement; fascinating historical detail entwined with a family story which will tug at the heart-strings.'

Ann Pilling was brought up in Warrington, Cheshire and many of her books are set in the industrial North West. After reading English at London University, she taught in Buckinghamshire (the setting for 'The Empty Frame'), then spent some time in America before returning to England and settling eventually in Oxford. She is married with two sons.

Ann has been writing books for children since 1983. Her first published novel was 'Black Harvest', the first in a series of ghost stories of which 'The Empty Frame' is the fifth. Among her many titles are several novels of contemporary life including 'Henry's Leg', which won the 1986 Guardian Award and was subsequently televised.

Whenever possible, Ann retreats to the Yorkshire Dales which she calls 'the country of my heart'. She loves animals, and Arthur, the family cat, has a starring role in 'The Empty Frame.'

'Black Harvest': "A disturbing and gripping tale"
The Times

'The Pit': "Highly recommended reading for boys and girls"
