3.0 out of 5 stars not the best of Stve Berry's novels 30 Dec 2010
By Amelrode TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I have to say that i was waiting eagerly for the next novel by Steve Berry, but it turned out to be a wee bit of a disappointment.

It still has all the usual trademarks of a Steve Berry novel staring Cotton Malone: short chapters, different angles to the same story, action and a sort of historical backgroundleading to the present time. But somehow this time it does not work as good as I hoped for. A power struggle in China, the ultimate power in the world - endless energy - and weird endless chases which of course the main characters survive. One can always rely on bad guys being very bad shots. The whole eunuch stuff does not work for me.

In short: It is not a bad book, but it does not keep the standards of the previous Cotton Malone stories. Solid, but not grabbing or inspiring.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Fun Fun 12 Jun 2011

Review

A really good fun thriller from Steve Berry, the last book "Paris Vendetta" had me worried that he was going off the boil, it was a little formulaic and tired, but this is Cotton Malone back with a bang.
I think the plot is helped by the fantastically vivid and mysterious background of ancient China and the mystery of the Emperors Tomb, who anyone with any interest in history cannot help but be entranced by, add to the the majesty of the terracotta army and the dpeth of history within the borders of China, there is a wealth of plot to work with. Id love to see more of Cotton in China (but i think he might have worn out his welcome).

A must read for Thriller or Adventure fans, (fans of Andy Mcdermott, James Rollins, James Twinings David Gibbins etc..)

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT HIS BEST....NOT HIS WORST... 6 Mar 2012
By Lawyeraau HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
I have been a fan of Steven Berry for some time, as his books have generally been interesting and gripping page turners. Unfortunately, this one was a bit of a slog. With writing that is oftentimes choppy and a plot that strains the imagination, this book is simply not one of his best, though loaded with some interesting historical facts.

Featuring the recurring characters of Cotton Malone and his friend Cassiopeia Vitt, this book involves a trip to China for our hero and heroine. Of course, as always, there are evil forces afoot.

It seems that Cassiopeia has gone to China to help a friend find his young son, who has been abducted. Though it has been a while since Cotton has seen Cassiopeia, he goes to the rescue when she unwittingly becomes a pawn in political intrigue in China that involves two wily government ministers that are vying for power. It seems that there is also an ancient, secret cabal that is driving the intrigue.

Though I found my interest in the book waning, at times, due to the quality of the writing, the historical aspects were quite interesting. Still, I found myself putting the book down for periods of time, when the book became downright tedious, only to return to it. After all, I wanted to know what happened. It just was not the page turner by the author that I was accustomed to reading. Still, fans of the author should get a modicum of enjoyment from the book.
