Product Description

CD Description

Undoubtedly the greatest qawwal (Qawwali performer) of his time, Nusrat is also one of the most respected and popular world music stars of the 20th Century. Khan, whose family has performed Qawwali for six hundred years, is single-handedly responsible for popularising this music in the West.
Nusrat reached out to Western audiences through his contributions to the soundtracks of The Last Temptation of Christ and Natural Born Killers, collaborations with Michael Brook and Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder and through his releases on Peter Gabriel's Real World Records label.
This 2CD set is the first compilation to collect together both Nusrat's traditional repertoire and the collaborative work he recorded in his later life. CD1 contains both best-known songs and rare recordings of the traditional material he made his name in the east with whilst CD2 contains remixes from the likes of Bally Sagoo and Gaudi which helped win him so many fans in the west.
Compiled by Asian music journalist Jameela Siddiqi who has also written the accompanying sleeve-notes using material from an interview she conducted with Nusrat shortly before his death.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Emperor - An introduction 19 April 2009
Format:Audio CD
Pakistan-born Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the most revered and prolific Qawwali singer in recording history, took an obscure religious musical form and, with the help of some sympathetic collaborators and promoters, made it commercially and artistically viable in the western world. Born to a family of Muslim devotional musicians, Khan succeeded his father as the leader of their family's singing group (or "party") in 1971. Up through the '80s he stuck to the traditional style of Qawwali singing, bringing his passionate and transcendent music to ever-increasing international audiences--religious and secular alike. By the '90s he began experimenting with pop-music hybrids, garnering the attention of influential fans like Eddie Vedder and Peter Gabriel. In 1997, at the height of his commercial success, Khan died of a heart attack at the age of 48, after a lifetime of health problems
