Format: Paperback
Although the edition sold here is from a different publisher, this is originally one of the Inspirations/Country Bumpkin publications and is of their usual very high standard.
It is basically a stitch dictionary, but there are very clear step-by-step photos of all the stitches - so many photos that it's as good as watching a demonstration! I found the instructions extremely clear and helpful where other books are hard to follow.
Certain stitches, such as bullions, blanket stitch, chain stitch, couching, ribbon stitch, satin stitch and so on, have several different variations, all demonstrated in detail. There are also over 40 hints which look at things like colour, types of thread and ribbon, why wool shrinks and much more.
This book contains everything you need for all general surface embroidery as well as several more specialised things such as ribbonwork.
There are no projects to work in the book, but there are a lot of photos showing how the stitches and techniques can be used. I traced one of these and stitched it up into a rather pretty little heart cushion. The designs are from 'Inspirations' magazine, so are very pretty and do indeed inspire.

I have rather more embroidery books than I care to admit to but when my friend showed me this I knew I had to have my own copy. The pictures are SO easy to follow and it's nice just to browse through even if you're not on a quest for a particular embroidery stitch! I do wish it was a little bit smaller as I have to cart it around with me when I go to my local embroidery group, but I wouldn't leave the house without it!!

Wonderful book just to browse through. But more importantly, when you have forgotten a particular stitch, the illustrations are very clear and helpful.
