Review

'A whimsical tale which will appeal to many children ... Children handling the book will surely enjoy the fact that, unusually, the illustration of the balloon folds out on itself to become twice as big as a double-page spread.' -- Mary Medlicott, The School Librarian, Autum 2007 'Gorgeous watercolour illustrations.' -- Frances Perkins, The Bournemouth Daily Echo 'My daughter and I read this book together. The way it is written and the length of the story is right for tiddlypeeps and young tweens. It is a lovely book and the illustrations are pretty. My daughter enjoyed listening to this story and it held her attention whilst we were pointing out the creatures and fairies in the picture too.' -- Totz2teens Member Review

Product Description

Old Redcap, an inventor elf, is proud of his best creation: a hot-air balloon with extra wings for steering. Suddenly Bluecap, a young elf, comes rushing through the woods. A fox has nibbled at the ropes holding the balloon down! Redcap and Bluecap both grab a rope, but can't stop the balloon rising into the sky - with the two elves still attached. Eventually darkness falls, and so does the balloon. When they wake the next morning, they find themselves in the land of the fairies, stuck on rocks which turn out to be a sleeping dragon. Their adventure is only just beginning. This is an exciting new story from the author and illustrator of "In the Land of Fairies", "In the Land of Elves", and "In the Land of Merfolk".

A great book. 20 Jan 2010
By steph
Format:Hardcover
I purchased this book recently for my four year old. It is a short, simple fairy tale that will appeal to both boys and girls and the illustrations are gorgeous. This is the author's best book yet.

Gorgeous illustrations -- Perfect for Autumn & Michaelmas 14 Oct 2009
By MamaG - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Daniela Drescher is without a doubt our favorite children's book illustrator. Her work is luminous and inspiring.

The plot of this book is more involved than in her other books (In the Land of Elves, In the Land of Fairies, In the Land of Merfolk). Since the drama is centered around specific characters, it's for a slightly older age group. Although my three-year-old enjoys it, it speaks more to my seven-year-old. I think around age 5 is about the time when a child would be able to come fully into the story.

It also features a little bit of dragon imagery (it's a kind dragon, not a scary one), which makes this a perfect book for Michaelmas time (Sept. 29), if your family celebrates this festival.

I cannot recommend this book any more highly. It is truly a treasure.

An Exciting, but Gentle Adventure 9 Jun 2009
By Rachel at EuphoriaBaby.com - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
My 2 year old son and 4 year old daughter both love this book. The adventure is exciting, yet gentle enough that it does not inspire any fear. In fact, the dragon is a gentle, guardian dragon - a perfect way to introduce little ones to the concept of a dragon.

The illustrations are gorgeous - suitable for framing! My kids especially love the fold-out extra-large page that shows the hot air balloon floating up into the sky at the beginning of the story. This book is popular with Waldorf families for good reason!

The story is pretty good, but what is striking is the artwork: magical. My son loves it.
