I love Garner and welcomed having some of his early work here on CD. I have the original LP containing these sides - a double Savoy LP (#2207)with 28 tracks. These were original 78s so the running time is brief, averaging 3 minutes a track. The sound on the LP was never great, but I figured it would be cleaned up for CD issue. Boy, was I wrong! The best thing about the CD is Garner's playing. The worst things are the fault of the CD. Crappy sound, too few tracks (28 has been condensed down to 12 here (!!!). When is the last time you found a jazz reissue CD with barely 34+ mins running time. Shameful. I understand that this is a UK budget album, but with an original recording date of 1949 wouldn't this music fall into the PD range? The sound on some of these tracks is just horrible. I'M IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE is just head turningly bad. If the Pickwick engineer could not EQ around these faults, then why not select another track? And of course Rob Porter's great liner notes on the original LP have been omitted. In short, if you're an uncritical Garner fan, buy it. All else, beware.
