Book Description

Is the nation really dumbing down? Are exams easier than they were in the good old days? Now's the chance to find out whether age really does equal wisdom with "The Eleven-Plus Book". A real way to contrast the schooling of yesteryear with modern-day practices and settle the debate that surfaces every summer about slipping educational standards. Every generation can attempt questions on a number of subjects from English and arithmetic to general knowledge and composition. Who will come out top in your family?

"The Eleven-Plus Book" is a fantastic nostalgic look back for all those who experienced the daunting exam the first time round, and a great way for the younger generation to prove that they have the wits to outsmart their elders!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Eleven-Plus Book by Stephen Martin 28 Nov. 2009
Format:Hardcover
I tutor children for the 11+ exams (Grammar & independent schools). Found this book really helpful. Surprisingly the children did enjoy solving the problems - thought it was quite challenging. I'd recommend this anytime, anyday.

4.0 out of 5 stars 'In great attempts it is glorious even to fail' 28 Jun. 2013
By Hal Marshall TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Following the proper mental thrashing I received recently from The O Level Book: Genuine Exam Questions from Yesteryear (Gift), I was overjoyed to find a brand new edition of 'The Eleven-Plus Book', which for some reason is not listed as one of the buying options on this website. It says it was published in 2013 and I got mine from a shop in the High Street. Obviously I can't say precisely where I got it though - or Amazon will give me the Works...

I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could actually make a fair stab at most of the questions in this book - and even more surprised to discover that quite a number of my answers were actually right! What a great pity that was obviously not the case thirty odd years ago, when I actually sat this particular test. Still, never mind. I had never really thought about the fact that obviously we couldn't all pass the Eleven-Plus, or the best schools would have run out of places. The numbers were rigged! I certainly feel better looking at my dismal failure from that perspective. According to Dr Stephen, the highly esteemed academic who provides the foreword to this book, girls were too successful as well, meaning that the marks had to be 'fiddled in order to give more grammar school places to the boys'. Well, I wouldn't have gone to one anyway then, on principle!

Who am I kidding? They could have fiddled things until the cows came home, I was never going to be welcomed into a grammar school. Hence my complete indifference to the contempt this test is held in by quite a large number of people. All I wanted was to see whether I would have a vague chance of passing this thirty years too late.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as smart as I thought! 5 July 2008
Format:Hardcover
Saw this recently in The Daily Mail - and did the quiz they printed - was shocked at how hard it was.
This is a great book and its fun to just pick out random questions and see how much you have forgotten or infact did not even know!
Am going to show this to my very bright goddaughter who is 13 - be fun to see how she copes with it.
Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun 4 Jun. 2009

If you like quizzes and puzzles and keeping your brain alive (I am a pensioner and need to!) this is fun and taxing. Did I really learn all this?

Some excellent samples of eleven plus papers from yesteryear. I can remember one paper that I actually sat! Reading and attempting to answer the questions may prompt debate about the value of the tests and whether the 11+ was devisive. However, when I tried them on some university students, I was surprised that few could answer a complete section correctly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just love this little book 17 Mar. 2015
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Just love this little book, I honestly don't remember ever taking the 11+ exam, so I just..... ''had to know'' how I may have fared, there's some teasing questions in it for you I have to say, all the answers are in the back, so you can ''check yourself out'', as an old teacher once told me, in an exam paper, some questions are pretty obvious, but some questions are worded as to mislead and confuse you, so as to ''make you think'', and ''make you think'' they do, if you have children or grandchildren of school age, then buy it, you can have a little ''family quiz'', or if you're retired like me, definitely buy it, and keep the ''grey matter'' working, enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alarming 23 Feb. 2009
Format:Hardcover
I'm a great fan of Dr Stephen, especially since he appeared on the Today programme and spoke eloquently about education, in stark contrast to the Ministerial waffle he was answering. This book is an eye-opener, and proof positive that exams are easier nowadays, despite all the official denials and alleged concentration on the 'three Rs'. Some of these questions would test modern GCSE students. So much for progress...
