Review

"The Elephant's Tale is the fourth book in a compelling series by Lauren St John. Set on a game reserve in South Africa it contains everything to make children sit up and listen to their bedtime story: the orphaned heroine with a gift for healing sick animals had my boys begging for just one more chapter." (Daisy Bridgewater TELEGRAPH MAGAZINE )

"...there is a warmth and love for animals that raises this above the herd. It is an enjoyable, action-packed tale." (TELEGRAPH )

"The interesting characters and compelling plot make this book an exciting read. There is a wealth of information contained within the story making the book feel like a learning experience as well as a piece of pleasurable literature. In the closing chapters of the book Martine uncovers some information about her future written on a cave wall. Are these spoilers left there by Lauren St John? I guess we will have to wait for the next book to find out." (Sam North HACKWRITERS.COM )

5.0 out of 5 stars The Elephants Tale 22 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover
The Elephant's Tale is the fourth book in the African adventures of Martine and her beloved white giraffe, Jemmy. Sawubona Game Reserve is in danger of repossession. Martine's grandfather signed the reserve over to one Reuben James after taking out a colossal and nigh impossible to pay back loan. Sawubona would be payment could Martin's grandfather not be able to pay back. Soon, Sawubona is swamped with James and his men. He plans to turn the reserve into a zoo, with Jemmy being the star attraction. Martine won't have it, and with her grandmother chasing a secret in England, Martine takes things into her own hands. She stows away on James plan and when they get to Namibia, goes on a quest to seek the truth. But she has just thirteen days. Is that enough time to save Sawubona and everything she loves? This book is a fantastic read. The sequel to The White Giraffe, Dolphin Song and The Last Leopard, the pace never slows down. From one thing to the next, this book is fast moving, riveting and most of all a story of fighting for what you love. I would recommend this book highly. Although I would say, read the first three first! Or else some of the aspects in The Elephant's Tale won't make sense

4.0 out of 5 stars Kept me reading. 11 April 2011
Format:Paperback
Lauren St John knows how to keep the reader turning the page. In this her fourth novel about Martine and her life at Sawubona Game Reserve, it is the reserve itself that is under threat. Reuben James presents a will that gives him the right of ownership. When Martine's Grandmother flies to England to uncover the truth about the will, Ben and Martine stowaway on a plane to Namibia. The two plan to find out more about Reuben James.
The book has both strong male and female characters, adventure and danger and short chapters which drive the reader on.
The title page is attractive and the book length itself is adequate rather than daunting. This animal series will appeal to 9-11 year olds and regularly goes out from the school library. The youngsters keenly await my copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic story from this author! 5 Feb 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
You have to get it! All the stories that she has written in this series are wonderful. It is always worth getting the first one, The White Giraffe, to read before reading any others as it sets the scene so perfectly for all other books. A must. I recommend age 9 for normal readers, or 7yrs if they are very able. Whats lovely is the series is all about adventure, no silly "girly love nonsense" that they don't need to read at such a young age!
My daughter and I went to see her at the the Bath Literary Festival and she was really good to listen to, she mentioned that she is writing a very different series now, I think mystery, though I don't know what age the books are for and when they are due to be published, so worth looking out for.
