This was my first purchase via Kindle and could well be my last. An appealing price compared to a paper copy attracted me to this version, but frequent typesetting problems and other display errors make it poor value.

A suitable example from chapter II section 16 as it appears on Kindle (before wrapping to the width of the window):

"... The subject of a sentence and the principal verb should not, as a rule, be separated by a phrase or clause that can be transferred to the beginning.
Wordsworth, in the fifth book of The Excursion, gives a minute description of this church.
Cast iron, when treated in a Bessemer converter, is changed into steel.
In the fifth book of The Excursion, Wordsworth
gives description of a minute this church.
By treatment converter, cast iron is changed into steel.
in a Bessemer" (sic. including pointless line breaks and jumbled words)

This should read:

In the fifth book of The Excursion, Wordsworth gives a minute description of this church.
By treatment in a Bessemer converter, cast iron is changed into steel."

It would be better still to keep something of the original layout in which the original (bad) and new (improved) versions sat side-by-side.

When the majority of the meaning of a book is about layout, careful placement of punctuation and sentence construction, errors such as these either:
(a) make the ebook utterly useless
or
(b) unintentionally turn each paragraph into a jigsaw puzzle which makes you concentrate harder.

It's a shame that Amazon don't have a extra review section, for comment on how the book translates into a Kindle edition. I'm having to mark Strunk's good work poorly, because the publisher has been too lazy to make a proper kindle edition. I'm sure this would be a good read if it was, y'know, readable. At the moment it's nothing other than robbery.

Many people recommended The Elements of Style, but have I made a mistake buying this publication? This edition is written by William Strunk, Jr only, he wrote the original version 1918. E.B. White updated the book in 1959 and wrote several subsequent editions expanding on the original text. The other clue that this book is not up to date is a statement inside the cover saying - Filiquarian Publishing, LLC is publishing this edition of Elements of Style, due to its public domain status. So is this version a publication of William Strunk's original version? If so, (I kind of feel like I have been duped) I wish I had brought the updated and expanded version. It is probably worth spending the extra money for the 50th Anniversary version because at least you know what you are buying.

I have also noted that reviews for this publication are exactly the same as the Strunk & White 1999 edition, this is deceiving as you perceive them as the same book.

I have given this publication two stars because, despite the above, I have learnt a bit.

There are currently 2 different editions of the Elements of Style commonly available on Amazon. One is a poorly formatted copy of the Public Domain version of the work, attributed only to William Strunk jr. The other is the revised edition of the work edited and expanded by E.B. White.

Be careful which version you buy.

I made the mistake of picking up the cheaper version and despite the woeful formatting, it's still an incredibly useful book.

This book was a struggle to read, mainly due to the awful formatting. The examples littered throughout tended to mix in with the main body of text, leading to their impact being reduced.

Buy the paper version.

Very poorly formatted and typeset. This book *needs* two column printing - with the erroneous text in the left panel and the corrections to the right. This edition simply had everything in line, with no distinction between good and bad versions.

Unhelpful in the extreme. Just because a title is public domain, doesn't mean it should be butchered in this way. Buy from a reputable publisher instead.

Rubbish typesetting on the kindle edition of this famous book! What a shame! I was hoping the problem has been fixed.

It's ok.. it's clearly just a print of some ebook edition with some things underlined as hyperlinks in slightly faded black... The text itself is useful. It's very dry, and suggests that a writer submits to all stylistic individuality being sapped out of them in favour of a deeply formulaic and simple, indeed hemmingway-esque, prose style. Still, not bad for understanding grammar and learning how to minimise padding in writing.
