Product Description

Product Description

Why do so many beginners, both children and adults, fail to master chosen skills? The Elements of Skill was inspired by—and addresses—that question with a program based on proven techniques. The book, written by a renowned practitioner of the Alexander Technique, outlines an educational system that makes the process of learning a performance or athletic skill more conscious, and therefore more successful. Its principles include breaking down a skill into manageable parts, setting realistic goals, observing mind/body processes, overcoming blocks, controlling habits, and achieving heightened awareness and self-mastery. Included are inspiring examples of people who have benefited from the method.

Although the book is not about the Alexander Technique, if like me you have been taking lessons and maybe not fully understanding what the teacher is aiming to accomplish, this book may shed some light.

It is going to be one of my favourites, now that I've finished reading it the first time round.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing Book for anyone who's trying to master any skill 11 Aug 2012
By boramiNYC - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This small book is a hidden gem. It's sad it hasn't been more widely read and reviewed by people. I'll gladly write the first review.

In the book, Dr. Dimon explains very clearly and convincingly how our mind and body systematically work in learning and mastering any new skill. I have seen many books on exploring the issue but never seen anything more comprehensive yet so simple. That is the beauty of Dr. Dimon's approach. It's right to the point and everything makes so much sense and actually works. Anybody who is trying to learn a skill like how to play instrument or how to play a sports or anything really can use this book to better understand how it can be done. This books gives whole new perspective and it's a truly eye opening experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Using the Mind to Learn 19 Jan 2013

An excellent book. Rated four stars rather than five because parts of the book were much more comprehensible due to my ten years in the martial arts. Without that experience I might have groping.
4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, unique book. 24 Nov 2013

Very well written, absolutely essential points for learning a physical skill. But too long, and repetitious. Could have been half its length. Nevertheless, highly recommended.
