Product Description

CD Description

London based Second Person blend their influences of hip hop, jazz and electronica with strong songwriting to form a unique sound that is post trip hop. Although influenced by trip hop heroes such as Bristol’s Portishead, singer/pianist Julia Johnson, producer/bassist Mark Maclaine and drummer Alvaro Lopez can nevertheless claim their own distinctive sound, contrasting beautiful vocals with dark basslines, sublime piano riffs and killer beats. The Elements follows on from their first album 'Chromatography' which was released in 2005. The critical success of that album, particularly in the UK, US and Australia, led to their music being sought out by the BBC and independent producers for use in numerous feature film scores and documentaries. This new release is the first album by any UK artist to be financed by SellaBand Believers. It is a five track concept album with each song inspired by one of the five Chinese elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. To bring the concept to visual life each song will be accompanied by a video clip, starting with the video for "Wood" which is included on both the Limited Edition and Jewelcase versions of The Elements and is already on rotation at MTV UK. The album was recorded in London at The Silence Corp, The Shop and The London Recording Studios (Queen, The Clash Madonna), and was produced and recorded by Tony Platt (Bob Marley, AC/DC) and Mark Maclaine. It was mastered by Ray Staff (Led Zeppelin, Muse) at Alchemy. Among the guest musicians present are the celebrated jazz trumpeter Guy Barker and British turntable champion DJ Muzzell. Tracks: Wood / Fire / Earth / Metal / Water.

"The Elements" by Second Person has arrived. This is an album beyond the usual CD. The 5 elements refer to Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water as used in the 9 Star Ki and Feng Shui Astrology. A song is dedicated to each of the elements, using the sound key unique to the element. Each of the songs is a polished diamond in its own right. From Wood you can hear the fire crack and turn to coal that nourishes Earth and Earth giving birth to beautiful gems, minerals and Metal: and Metal providing the essential minerals to Water that is absorbed by Wood. The sensual, expressive vocals and the subtle arrangements combined with the creative score and the most amazing video for Wood (4 more to come) will have you happily playing the songs on replay over and over again, without getting bored. A magical album! This review pertains to the limited edition of "The Elements".

The songwriting talents of Maclaine and Johnson with the silky allure of Julia's vocals make the elements one of the albums of the year. Perfect.

This is a very nicely themed post-trip-hop album. It is packed to the rafters with nice effects, extremely good lyrics and the beautiful voice of Julia Johnson. 5 songs may seem not so much music, but believe me, you will get your moneys worth!

Oddly Muted and so-so
Atmospheric and interesting, but not an album that has lived in the memory. The style, modern and ambient, is fine but doesn't greatly move the emotions.

Occasional signs of a mature sound, but only occasionally...
I'd already written a reasonably comprehensive review of this mini-album but for some unknown reason, it's gotten lost in the amazon filing system. Read more

Stunning
It makes you weep when you hear music like this, by artists struggling for recognition, having their recordings funded by their fans, but the fact that you've discovered it gives... Read more

Chilled and cool
This was a nice little album. I thought it was chilled out and relaxed...almost ambient. Nice for background music, not exactly party music but that's just what you need... Read more

Not really my thing, but enjoyable enough
As other reviewers have already said, I, too found this album enjoyable, although it probably isn't something I would have picked up by choice. Read more

Not bad

Pleasant "post trip hop", easy on the ear
The term "post trip hop" has been applied to this music. Hip-hop and most of its relatives are not beloved of this reviewer, but this album is interesting and easy on the ear. Read more

Why have I never heard these people before??!

Pleasant enough for fans of Portishead
This short mini-album is a decent showcase for the talents of this interesting young band. I'd have thought that their chosen genre trip-hop had withered away sometime around the... Read more
