This is an absorbing, fascinating, thought-provoking novel about human beings' capacities for cruelty and love. It shows the extremes of which people are capable, delineating some of the atrocities of Nazi Germany in unexpected, never cliched ways. But it never becomes unbearable to read. In fact, in the paradoxical way of great art, it remains entertaining however grim its material. Yet the material is not always grim. The novel is also a love story, and a touching one. Recommended as an excellent read that will alter your view of human nature and the world.
