Biography

Biographyby Jason Ankeny

The Electric Light Orchestra's ambitious yet irresistible fusion of Beatlesque pop, classical arrangements, and futuristic iconography rocketed the group to massive commercial success throughout the 1970s. ELO was formed in Birmingham, England in the autumn of 1970 from the ashes of the eccentric art-pop combo the Move, reuniting frontman Roy Wood with ... Read more in Amazon's E.L.O. Store

Wishing to place a more balanced view of the contents of this two disc 40th Anniversary edition for ELO's first album, I'm in agreement, for the most part, with the other reviewers here, Fletch and Cran4. To my ears what's released here is probably the last word as to a definitive re-issue for The Electric Light Orchestra album number one (known in the USA as "No Answer"). I won't bore you with a track by track review of the music, that sort of info can be found in abundance elsewhere. I'm more interested in the content.

The main album, tracks 1-9 on the cd are from the 2001 remaster "Electric Light Orchestra/First Light" 30th anniversary series. The bonus tracks, remastered in 2006 can be found on "The Harvest Years 1970-1973" which also contains the main album tracks as well as the complete ELO II album and a third disc with the Quad mix of the first album SQ encoded on cd (very basically if your amp can be set to play cd audio via a Dolby processor, you can sort of hear the Quad mix pretty much the same as the 5.1 Dolby mix included with this new edition). Many hardcore fans are not happy with Peter Mew's work on these remasters but they sound pretty good to me. If you haven't bought either of the previously released titles of which only "The Harvest Years" is still in print, this 40th Anniversary release is good value for you.

So for ELO collectors there's nothing new here on cd. The attraction obviously is the dvd, specifically the 4.

The Birth of one of the 70's super-groups here, When Jeff Llynne joined What was left of the Move it was based on the promise of something new. Once Roy Wood had started to overdub cellos onto a Move song the concept was born that song became the opening track on this album '10538 Overture' and the rest is history.
Harvest still one of the coolest looking labels have done us proud with this 40th anniversary edition, two discs a CD which contains the whole album plus 6 bonus tracks all of which have been released before on the 30th anniversary First light edition and a later compilation. Two versions of the '10538 overture' (Move version and a version for Top of the Pops Post Roy Wood with some slightly different instrumentation) Two versions of 'Mr Radio' and alternate takes of 'Nellie takes her Bow' and 'Whisper in the night'.
What makes this release worth the money is the second disc a DVD, which has a DTS 96/24 and Dolby digital transfer of the original Quad Mix very discrete and and giving at times a radical remix of the album, not afraid to spread the instrumentation around the sound field, 'Mr radio' and 'Queen of the hours' almost sound like a different takes. Even 'The Battle of Marston Moor' sounds great and seems to make more sense. I am a succour of Vintage Quad mixes and this one does not disappoint.
Also for fans of the stereo mix you get a flat 96/24 LPCM transfer of the original Stereo master. This has never sounded better.
Finally some visual content in the form of the promo video of '10538 Overture'.
Fans of wondering why buy this album again don't think just buy it if you have a surround sound system then this really is a no brainer.

I experienced this initially on record during the mid 70s - it's always been interesting listening to ELO in their early days when "classical rock" mean just that. The remastered CD is very good - much clearer than the standard one I owned and less than a wall of sound. The quad mixes sound great on a surround sound system and one wonders what the reaction to quad must have been in those dark days...

Recommended if you like ELO or want to learn how they sounded in their earlier days; this isn't their best but it does stand up to repeated listening... you can almost be on Marston Moor...

Excellent value for money! Original High Resolution recording (will not play on standard CD player!) and remaster of same, plus video. Excellent package. Roy Wood is also here, an added bonus before Wizard!

The 5.1 mix is great, really, but, I didnt like the album. My dad loved ELO so much I bought it, since we have some similarities in what we like in music. Overture is a great song but the rest is just OK.

this is great for ELO fans who have to have but if just like elo hits avoid this one its not for you. there are some glimmers of what they went on to produce in later years but most of it is bad bev bevan refused to play drums on one track thats how bad it was
