Product Description

Follow the twenty year quest as Matt serves up a real ‘How-Not-To Guide’ for anyone who has ever dreamed of strapping on an electric guitar and going in search of the perfect riff, groupie filled parties and rock ‘n’ roll immortality.

The quest takes us from his humble beginnings awkwardly strumming folk songs on a battered acoustic guitar, through to awkwardly belting out rock anthems on a battered electric guitar, before graduating to performing with a half decent electric guitar in numerous bands across a multitude of genres and then finally finding a brief five (not quite fifteen) minutes of fame in the early 1990’s as the singer-guitarist of an indie rock band.

Are you ready to rock?

Born in Birmingham in 1966 and bought up on the outskirts of Wolverhampton. Matt has lived in Portugal, Yorkshire, Suffolk, Kent and Spain. At one time or other he has been a trainee erection engineer, a semi-professional rock musician and a butt-kissing corporate whore.

Now in his mid-forties he currently divides his days between writing and, as writing doesn't appear to pay that much, doing other stuff that helps pay the bills.

His first book "Drunk in Charge of a Foreign Language (The Diary of a Spanish Misadventure)" told the story of a three month camping tour around Spain that he and his wife undertook in 2006. A month into the tour it went horribly wrong when she asked for a divorce and flew back to England. Matt didn't, he continued the journey alone. What unfolded was a drunken (and let's make that very drunken), tragi-comic journey around the rest of Spain.

His second book "The Electric Guitar Daydream Quest" was published in November 2013. Matt describes it as a prequel to Drunk in Charge; a sort of coming of age memoir that takes you through his early life, when the pursuit of free-love, fame and fortune with an electric guitar was all he ever thought about.

The fact that I grew up in the same time period as the author made this book all the more relevant and funny for me. I love the way he describes memorable moments in his life, such as when his dad came into his room to give him "the talk" about girls! I now have an urge to look up chapter 8 of James Herbert's "The Rats". Hope to see more work in the future from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb and witty tale of a rock star wannabe 2 Dec 2013

A fantastic read and a must for anyone who has ever dreamt of being a famous rock musician.
Played to the backdrop of the UK rock music scene through the 70's/ 80's and the West Midlands indie scene through the 90's, It sees our protagonist Matt embark on a journey to hopeful stardom through alcohol induced anecdotes taking in all the highlights and lowlights of a growing lad in the midlands trying to put together the perfect band and live out the perfect daydream.
A real easy read with a Nick Hornby meets Adrian Mole reminiscing feel to it, but with more alcohol than the 2 combined!

Another fantastic laugh out loud book! Love Matt's writing style, felt as though I was there every step of the way. My teen years were spent in the sixties - a fantastic time music wise. I brought up my kids through the late seventies and eighties and the radio was always on, music was so exciting then. Matt's book transported me right back there. Can't wait for his next book!!
