One of a series of top-quality fiction for schools. Mouse is terrified when Marv Hammerman says he's out to get him. He and his friend Ezzie prepare for the worst, and they get it - sharks in their swimming area, a biting tarantula. When it comes to the 18th emergency, they are caught off guard.

I have recently read this book to a class of 30 children aged 11 and 12. They were thouroughly enthralled in the story. The book has a lot of humour in it and the children could relate well to many of the experiences especially those relating to bullying. The book goes through a number of 'emergencies' which the children in my class shared their opinions on. All the time they were eagerly waiting to find out just what the 18th emergency would be. What was it?.... You will have to read it to see!

This book is very good and I'd reccomend it to you. It's about two lads who have thought of a way to stop every emergency they can think of, but not how to stop Marv Hammerman beating them up, this is the eighteenth emergency. It's very funny and read it if you want a good enjoyable book to take up some of your free time.

I have fairly enjoyed this book, with its hilarious, exciting solutions to unbelievable problems such as getting caught in a quicksand or with a shark in the sea!!! The best thing I have really enjoyed is that it just describes how a young boy's life would generally be at school, and the basic problem he would surely face there, being bullied by older boys. It is very annoying but in this book it is hilarious how they all fear one particular boy,Marv Hammerman,up to an unvelievable extent. Here is where all the humour lies! But Betsy Byars ended the book in a fairly enjoyable way which teaches us one very inportant moral, never give up but stand up and fight and try hard because you might do it, you never know, and Mouse certainly did. I really didn't give it a rating of five because in spite of the excellent storyline of the book, the level of excitement was not kept fairly high throughout the book. The story was sometimes rather lame but other than that, the story still kept its humour and interesting hilarity! If you have enjoyed othe books by Betsy Byars, then you better read this one too!
