Product Description

It was in 1976 that I wrote The Ehrengraf Defense, introducing a dapper gentleman with a highly idiosyncratic approach to the practice of criminal law. My agent sent the story to Frederic Dannay, one of two cousins who constituted the writing team of Ellery Queen. Fred edited Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine as well, and loved the story; he saw Martin H. Ehrengraf as a lineal descendant of Randolph Mason, the creation of Melville Davisson Post. (Since I’d never heard of Post’s stories, let alone read them, I doubt he was my inspiration. Indeed, the character was entirely my idea—although I did lift a plot element from Fletcher Flora.)

Fred wanted more Ehrengraf stories, and over time I wrote a total of ten of them. Most of them made their first appearance in EQMM, and proved popular with readers—and especially with members of the legal profession. Make of that what you will.

More About the Author

Lawrence Block has been writing award-winning mystery and suspense fiction for half a century. His most recent novels are A DROP OF THE HARD STUFF, featuring Matthew Scudder, and GETTING OFF, starring a very naughty young woman. Several of his books have been filmed, although not terribly well. He's well known for his books for writers, including the classic TELLING LIES FOR FUN & PROFIT, and THE LIAR'S BIBLE. In addition to prose works, he has written episodic television (TILT!) and the Wong Kar-wai film, MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS. He is a modest and humble fellow, although you would never guess as much from this biographical note.

4.0 out of 5 stars Criminal Lawyer 15 Jun 2012

This was an entertaining short story. Sharp, satiric and well written.
It is pretty short but it does tell a complete story.

Ehrengraf does seem the type of lawyer that would be useful if you ever did find yourself in trouble with the law!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wicked story 7 May 2012
By Bob Gatsoff - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Quite a treat reading of the unorthodox methods of Martin Ehrengraf, Esq. I assume Mr. Ehrengraf keeps his fee policy secret, because as one of my lawyer friends told me years ago, it is unethical to charge a contingency fee for a criminal case. Could get you disbarred. Yes, I know - literary license.

5.0 out of 5 stars I feel guilty for getting this free... 10 May 2012

...because the pleasure I gained from the deft introduction to Martin Ehrengraf is worth paying for. The canny lawyer is vividly described in his elegant suits and polished shoes, but what sets him apart from many protagonists is the approach he takes to his job. Any client with a lick of sense takes his advice seriously and pays his fee promptly, while the reader finds herself wildly curious about this fascinating representative of the law. The writing is beautifully spare, but what lies behind it taps into the jungle that makes Mr. Ehrengraf's profession necessary. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was my first introduction to Martin Eherngraf 5 April 2012
By Bill Bernico - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I listened the the audio version of this story as read by Roddy McDowell and got hooked on the whole Ehrengraf series. Martin Ehrengraf is my kind of lawyer. That is, he gets results without letting due process get in the way. Sure, his rates are high, but he's worth every penny. He could very well be best friends with John Keller. They have a lot in common. Well done, Larry.

And love the work of Mr. Block. These Ehrengraf short stories are fun. Try a few, you will agree too.

Terrible mystery with one murder solved in a horrendous way. Unbelievable. The attorney shocked his client and got her son released.
