It is scary to read something like this, and realise that these issues concerning Big Business & the future of this planet are still not seriously adressed by each and every one of us. I read this book because of the film / documentary 'The Corporation'. Business HAS to change. WE have to change. With this book there is hope, but for the moment we are still asleep, I only hope we have set the alarm!

A great read 20 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book is ageing a bit now, but the ideas in it are still sound, and Hawken presents his arguments in clear and cogent fashion. This seems to be one of those books that many people regard as a seminal influence in how they look at the way they do business or live their lives, and it's clear why.
I'd heard about it a number of times before deciding to buy a copy and see for myself. The reason why I got it in the end was that I had read a couple of other books and seen presentations which made reference to examples quoted in this book (St Matthew's Island being one example) and thought that I should look at this source reference as well. The book is structured as presenting a range of challenges and then discussing possible solutions to these within a real world context, so it is a practical primer on applied sustainability as well as a thesis on the limitations of existing business models and the need for wider change.
Well worth hunting down. I shall be using it as a reference for a long time to come.

A Green Manifesto 15 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
With "The Ecology of Commerce", Hawken probably created one of the most convincing books to go green. As a reader it is fairly hard not to agree with his substantive argument that the time of a new way to practice business and live our lives has arrived. Although almost a bit one-sided, Hawken's line of argument is more than sense-making. He starts a lively discussion about how the future should look like regarding the interplay between business and environment.

Although this book provides plenty of indirect advices for business professionals to convince doubters from green business practices, it is not written as a practical guide. It is written as a manifesto and does not give the reader much choice not to believe in it. Why should it? Its arguments pro environmentalism are flawless.

In case you are not convinced of the green hype that is making its way into daily practices at the moment, or you need a confirmation that what you feel is the right thing to do, read this book. It will not only overwhelm you with arguments to live more environmental friendly, but it will also animate you to spread Hawken's word, convince friends and family, and make this planet greener.
