Product Description

Product Description

As interest in natural food and authentic recipes grows, the hunter-gatherer instincts of the population are reawakening. People are increasingly turning to fields, hedgerows, woodlands and the seashore as sources of unusual ingredients which can bring the taste of the wild into their kitchens. In spring, there is wild sorrel or young nettles to make soups, wild garlic for sauces or risottos and, for those fortunate enough to live in the right places, delicious morels. In summer, beachcombers can gather marsh samphire and sea kale, while moorland will yield bilberries, and woods and hedges produce a host of wild herbs. Autumn brings fruits, nuts and a wide variety of edible fungi, and even in the depth of winter it is possible to find a range of ingredients for salads or to gather cockles from the beach at low tide. Illustrated with a unique combination of photography, which shows food in its wild state, and artwork which can be used to illustrate significant features and highlight key points for identification purposes, The Easy Wild Food Guide should find a place in every pocket or backpack on a country or seaside ramble at all seasons of the year.

Safety in the Wild 18 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
Great little reference book which fits handily into a rucksack. Accurate descriptions of plants with good illustrations to aid identification. Points out the "dangers " of look-a-likes. Details of species, habitats etc. Great for intrepid explorers or those just interested in adding some different ingredients to the kitchen cupboard - safely.Highly recommended.

Not what I expected 7 Sep 2009
By Kig
Format:Paperback
This book does not hit the mark at all. Some of the photographs are really fuzzy and it's full of rather old fashioned drawings. The whole book feels like it's stuck in the 1970's - in fact I sent it back. I would buy the Collins Gem book "Food for Free" instead, you will find it much more rewarding.

An Excellent Book 18 Jan 2011
By Barry
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent reference book. It is very well presented with photographs, illustrations and key facts. It is very easy to comprehend and very well laid out. I recommend it as a first class introduction to the topic of foraging, which will certainly whet the appetite for a more in depth study if required.

The book certainly provides all you need to start to practically explore the countryside/sea shore, with added tips on food preparation
