The second part offers quick recipes that are a little more indulgent and includes 'Easy Classics', 'Easy Lunches', 'Easy Snacks', 'Easy Entertaining' and 'Easy Baking'.

Book Description

Make delicious meals in minutes with this fab collection of quick-and-easy recipes from the UK's fastest-growing cookery magazine

About the Author

Sarah Giles is Editor of BBC Easy Cook magazine. Her passion for cooking started with the encouragement of two 'fantastically inspirational' home economics teachers at school and having learnt all the basic, essential recipes and good old-fashioned techniques from them, she went on to cook as a hobby for many years, eventually becoming a finalist on Masterchef in the early years of the show.

She has worked as a journalist and editor on many different lifestyle and home-interest magazines and became Food Editor of Easy Cook in 2006 and then Editor in 2007.

'It's my dream job,' she says. 'When I'm cooking, I like to make tasty, nutritious food without spending hours in the kitchen - and that's exactly what Easy Cook is all about.'

I made a promise to myself: I would cut down on ready meals as much as possible. No longer would I allow E number infested, plastic wrapped travesties to touch my lips.

Now, there were problems with that: I didn't know how to cook even the most basic of meals and I had the perception that cooking was a waste of my time. Real Food for Busy People seemed to suit my circumstances, so I gave it a shot.

As mentioned in other reviews, the food photography in this book is vivid, well printed, and presented in such a way that almost every dish looks appealing. Verdant green beans, craters of burnt cheese, succulent meats. The presentation made me want to get stuck in right away.

The book is divided into logical sections: every day food for when you only have 20 minutes or so to prepare a meal, weekend food for when you have a little more time and the inclination to try something more complex, and their attendant snacks and desserts.

My first meals were exclusively from the 20 minute section. The meals frequently have ingredients in common, so it's easy to buy standbys to suit several recipes. This is a big plus point for me, as I despise shopping. I found cooking quite difficult at first, but the simple, clear instructions in the book encouraged me and I've grown in confidence with each successful meal. I've yet to have a true dud and many of the recipes lend themselves to a degree of improvisation.

The only (minor) criticisms of the book I have are:
I wish it was longer!
There aren't a great deal of vegetarian recipes, though there are a few.

Highly recommended as a gift for the cook-shy person in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new favourite cook book 15 July 2010
Bought this book last week and after spending the weekend flicking through the recipies, I bought a few ingredients and dived in.

Brilliant easy recipes - some unusual, some fairly standard but all tasty and easy. I'm a good cook but don't like spending hours in the kitchen after a day at work, plus need a bit of inspiration every now and then for something new. Plus because the recipes are quick and easy there seems to be less washing up (bonus).

The Spicy Lamb with warm couscous is a particular triumph and now Harissa paste will be a regular purchase on my trip to the super market.

In fact - this book is so good that 11 months later I tried to review it a 2nd time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow - mouthwatering food and so easy to make. 23 Jun 2009
I recently won this book in a competition and I quickly scanned through it to see what it was like. On first impressions that came to mind were colourful, clear layout and mouth-watering pictures. When I sat down to have a more in-depth read my mouth began to water even more. This book has the most amazing photographs: the food is well presented and looks like, well, real food.
Anyway, I digress. The Easy Cook Cookbook is exactly what it says it is. Set into two sections, one for everyday food and the other for weekend food, this recipe book is akin to that series of books for non-intelligent people (come on, work it out!) With easy ideas for snacks, family dinners and even three course dinner party menus, this is the guide for me. Now I love to cook but sometimes I get stuck for something new, especially when entertaining. So, with plans for this Friday to go round to friends for dinner (we bring dessert) I had to try one. I've had a go at the cheat's blackberry meringue cake for dinner parties. With one major change - I had everything except blackberries in the house, but I did have strawberries. It worked! It smells delicious and has frozen perfectly. I can't wait to try it on Friday.
So, if you love to cook or would love to have a try, or even just looking for something new, this book is for you! Though I recommend reading it on a full stomach or you could just get a bit peckish.

5.0 out of 5 stars revolutionary! 17 Jan 2011
By Vikki
I bought this book for my hubby because he does most/all the cooking and we have a one year old and are indeed very busy. However, as someone who doesn't really spend much time cooking, this book has revolutionised (sp) my culinary skills. The recipes are straight forward, delicious and don't require vanilla pods picked by nuns...or other ingredients you can never find. This is the first review I have ever written but was compelled to do so because this book is so brilliant!
