More About the Author

Brian Wildsmith was raised in the mining village of Penistone, near Sheffield. He won a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art, where he studied for three years, then spent his National Service teaching music at the Royal Military School of Music. After his time in the Army, he became an art master, but soon gave up teaching to pursue his life-long ambition of becoming a painter.

He believes that children like good illustrations and well-designed books and are much better able to understand "difficult" art than some adults acknowledge. He says: "Picture books give an opportunity for a marriage between painting and illustrating, and the challenge of designing each page is very stimulating. I believe that beautiful picture books of the right kind are vitally important in subconsciously forming a child's visual appreciation, which will bear fruit later in life."

Brian's work is both provocative and stimulating and he now enjoys a world-wide reputation as one of the greatest living children's illustrators. He is particularly popular in the USA, Europe and Japan. In Leningrad he was responsible for all the sets and some of the costumes for the film The Blue Bird, based on Maurice Maeterlinck's famous play, and in 1996, as a celebration of Brian's special relationship with Japan, Oxford University Press published Katie and the Dream-Eater written by Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado of the Japanese Imperial Family. Brian has published over 70 books with OUP over his career.

Brian's hobbies include music, cricket (he has played League cricket for Yorkshire and won cricket colours for University College, London), and tennis. He is married with four children and now lives in the South of France.

Product Description

Review

The Easter Story tells this difficult tale gently, and at the right level for the age-group. The introduction of the donkey as a central character is inspirational and the lavish use of gold and colour makes this a special picture book. (The Daily Telegraph)

Brian Wildsmith ornaments the Easter story with lashings of colour, great splodges of gold and brilliantly-painted angels who hover about. Whether religious or not, there is something in everyone that will always respond to the Easter story. This one works beautifully for four to seven-year-olds. (The Daily Mail)

Book Description

A child-friendly and accessible retelling of the Easter story through the eyes of the donkey that carries Jesus into Jerusalem.

This is a beautifully illustrated and well told version of the Easter Story by Brian Wildsmith.
I believe it would be suitable for all ages!
The illustrations have a timeless quality which I love.
Be aware that there are two versions, a small book and the large one.

One of the best I've seen and I will use it in class via a visualiser and interactive whiteboard because it is far better than any illustrated online Easter story that I have come across.

I should have noticed this before buying - please don't make the mistake I did. It is a miniature edition and if you love Brian Wildsmith's illustrations, as I do, this is a source of frustration. The format does not do justice to his wonderful pictures.

Excellent, touching, visually beautiful, understated. Sounds cheesy or contrived that it's written from the donkey's point of view, but it works! Looking forward to giving it to my 5-yr old child.

This little book is beautifully illustrated and keeps accurately to the biblical account of the first Easter. It was given as a present on the occasion of a baptism so was ideal.

This is a lovely story however on Kindle it is pointless. The pictures and all in black and white (which you would expect on a black and white kindle), however it is not adaped to cater for the smaller size of the kindle compared to the original book. The words are far too too small to read and are very hard to see as there is no shade difference between the background pictures and the words. It just seems that someone has done a bad photocopy of the book and called this this kindle edition. Very dissapointing, and a complete waste of money.

A charming little book. I thought was not available and then it arrived. Really lovely and I will use next year. The book is in such good condition you would not know it is second hand.
